As the title suggests; I'm moving to Yate very shortly and wondered which bus company provides the cheapest, most comfortable and most reliable service. On top of that what sort of vechiles appear on these services?

First. Without a shadow of a doubt.
First use mainly Geminis on the 342.
Wessex use Plaxton Centros on the X27, but their service is diabolical.
There is also the train from Yate too.

Mainly Darts on the 327, but sometimes the older Step entrance ones.

darts with WIFI can turn up on the 327 some times but takes a long time, you also have the 689 it all depends on what part of yate you are moving too

I live in the North Yate area although at the moment I am currently away at university in Huddersfield.
The quickest buses from Yate to Bristol are the Wessex operated X27 from North Yate and the First operated 342 from South Yate, or if you are traveling at peak times, the X42 is quicker still.
The 327 operated by First and the 689 operated by Wessex Connect take considerably longer to travel between Yate and Bristol. The 689 especially so so my advice would be to avoid these routes if you want the quickest journey.
There is also a 329 route which runs on sundays and bank holidays only which is operated by Wessex Connect. This serves both South and North Yate
Probably the most important thing to point out about the buses in the North Yate area is the ticketing. Wessex Connect tickets are not accepted on First buses at all and not all types of First tickets are accepted on Wessex Connect buses. For example they don't seem to accept First Weekly tickets on the X27 so this is a factor worth taking into account if you are planning on buying a multi journey/season ticket for one route or if you are planning to travel into Bristol on a Wessex service but then need to change onto a bus run by First.
You can get round this by purchasing an Avon Rider Ticket which costs £7.20 for a day of unlimited travel and which can be used on all the routes from Yate into Bristol regardless of the operator. This is a good ticket although I have had a few instances where drivers who have been unaware of it have refused to accept one which has been issued by the other company.
The 342 is probably the most frequent bus, running every half an hour during the day monday to saturday and hourly in the evenings and on sundays(every 2 hours on sunday evening). The X27, 327 and 689 both run hourly during the daytime on Monday to Saturday(although the timetable is a bit different at weekends) and the 329 runs twice an hour. The x42 is a commuter service which only runs to Bristol in the morning and returns in the afternoon/early evening although if you have the opportunity to catch this, it reaches Yate Shopping Centre and South Yate quicker than the 342 will do.
In terms of reliability I'd say that on the whole there is no problem with any of the main routes. However, if you are in North Yate and the X27 fails to turn up due to a delay or a breakdown, it can be quite problematic as there are no alternative services passing the area.
The X27 can get quite overcrowded at certain times of the day. In particular at rush hour times but other than that, its normally not too bad during the day. The 342 and X42 mainly use double deckers which are almost always adequate for the number of passengers. The 327 often uses darts which can get rather packed coming out of Bristol in the evening. The 689 uses single deck vehicles of varying capacity and again this route is often rather packed if you use it out of Bristol in the evening.
Something else worth noting is that the X42, 327 and 342 terminate at Bristol Bus Station but the X27 and 689 don't call here. The X27 continues to the Anchor Road area and the 689 terminates outside the Colston Hall so this might be another factor you might want to consider if you are traveling to a particular area of Bristol.
