If it doesn't take cash, you can buy on the train.
It’s possibly also worth mentioning, if you’re not familiar with the area, that Eaglescliffe Station is closer and/or easier to reach from parts of Yarm than Yarm Station itself is.
The two stations are served by different services, however.
In any event, @185143’s advice is correct; if the ticket vending machine can’t take cash them you may buy on board.

The place i am staying at in Yarm is about 100 yards from Yarm station
Depending on where I go I will probably have to change at Middlesbrough or thornaby
