Whenever I'm in SimSig, and reroute a train or something because of track circuit failure etc, the headcode will change from say 1S33 to XXXX, or will disappear altogether. Anyway around this, or should I signal better :D

Right click on the XXXX headcode and choose 'interpose' you can then enter your own headcode - best to stick with the one it started with - eg 1S33.

I dont know why it does it, but if your train leaves your area with the XXXX headcode it generates an error.

Thanks - they tend to disappear on mine, leaving loads of red track occupied bits, which are a pain to get off (I don't even know if you can!) :D

You get the XXXX TID when the system cannot move the TID from one berth to another. This will not happen if you route via main signals unless your train goes over a TCF where you will get XXXX in the next berth because (due to the TCF) the system thinks that the train has not entirely left the section.
It can also happen if you route passenger trains via shunt signals IIRC.

You get a penalty if a train leaves your area with an XXXX headcode because of course the next signaller will not know the TID of the train.

If you have a red train with no headcode then right click on the next signal of the train's route and interpose the headcode that way (if you know what it should be!). The train will 'pick it up' when it passes.

'red track occupied bits' are either a train, or a track circuit failure (TCF).

TCFs will only occur if you have them turned on in the options.
