I've just moved to within 10 houses of the XPT depot at Marrickville and was wondering if there's a way of doing a tour of it? Do they do open days or anything? i mean i can see half of the depot myself from where i live i just wondered if it's at all possible.

Secondly can anyone confirm the status of both 2006 and 2008 as i saw 2006 going around with the doors from 2008 yesterday whilst I was at Redfern this is mainly querying if 2008 is still in service or if they just borrowed the doors off 2008 or applied the wrong number to the doors on 2006?

Since you live so close, I would just strike up a conversation with one of the staff, explain your interests and you are a neighbor. Maybe you can get an invite into the depot that way?

It may take a few tries with different folks if you don't get good results. Let us know what happens.

Forget about getting a tour of the depot. Sydney/NSW Trains are highly risk averse. Railway staff are scared witless about doing anything which might bring a reprimand. Very long time railfans like myself and many of my colleagues cannot get any concessions in any area. You stay in the public areas only and never enter the railway corridor, to do so will bring a heavy fine for trespassing. The graffitti vandals have made things worse. As the railways have cracked down on them the actions also adversely affect railfans. I can only see things continuing to get worse.

I just had a trip out to Australia and saw 2006 in service.

I've always been unlucky with 2010, never seen it.

It is usual for platforms 3 & 4 to be use to keep services to time when there are delays on the main Illawarra platforms 5 & 6. This use is particularly so when there is trackwork taking place in the area.

Just returned from a couple of weeks in the area and can confirm both 2006 and 2008 are operational. The only XPT power car not seen at all was 2010!

I Saw 2010 on a Brisbane working parked next to the Indian Pacific with 2014 as Company. Also noted quite a few Waratahs Milleniums and S Sets on the Intercity platforms lately due to the Show at the AFL ground at Olympic park. I Hope we get Waratahs on tonight Olympic park Specials for the Nrl Game v the Broncos :)

You can get anything by way of rolling stock on Olympic Park specials, including V sets laying over from Newcastle services.

Please get your terminology correct.

The Showground is at Olympic Park as is the Olympic Stadium plus another performance venue which seems to change its name regularly.
football is played at both the Olympic Stadium and the Showground arena. The areas around the various spaces is very flexible. Surrounding space is routinely varied with portable fencing to assist with crowd control.
