The post you were replying to was talking about Merseytravel. Did you mean Stagecoach when you said "they"?
Yes, 'they' is Stagecoach. I was originally replying about the Stagecoach website back in post 51 (https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/xmas-bus-timetable.294737/page-2#post-7573060) and that is where the confusion then came from as 'they' (stagecoach) had put on the website no services in Cheshire.

It flowed in my head, apologise for any confusion caused.

Goodness me, that's a surprising set of routes. The 102 I get, but the rest?
Especially given their much busier sister company in Oxford aren't running any regular buses.

I guess some BSIP money must be involved.

My thoughts entirely. The 102 I could see the point but not the others... And yes, BSIP sprang to mind but you've got stuff that is Bucks AND Berks (9 and 37B) so I think they might not be.

Very brave!!

Stagecoach East and West Scotland have published their festive information and all is contained in this link.

As usual, nothing on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

On Boxing Day and 2 January, some core routes and tenders will operate within reduced operating hours.

Details of the McGill’s Bus Group operations are now available on the respective websites.
All largely the same as in previous years.
Just checked the MB Festive info again and there’s a link to the early run-ins posted under the 29th and 30th which you would normally expect on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

Surely that’s an aberration?

Going by what's on Bustimes, Arriva are running a Christmas Day & Boxing Day service on the A & Z circular service between Luton Airport, Luton, Dunstable and Houghton Regis - every 90 minutes in each direction - all day including overnight. Whilst the old version of the A ran between Luton Airport, Luton and Dunstable on Christmas Day & Boxing Day last year, it'll be the first time there's been buses to Houghton Regis, Lewsey Farm and Luton & Dunstable Hospital on Christmas Day as far as I'm aware, and the timings are perfect for getting to Church that morning. I've not seen anything formal from Arriva as yet.

Service A (25/12/25)
Service Z (25/12/25)

First Aberdeen have published their festive service information.
https://www.firstbus.co.uk/aberdeen/plan-journey/festive-service-levels

As usual, there is no service on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

The usual Fri and Sat night (i.e. early Sat and Sun morning) buses seem to operate as normal throughout the festive period.

In typical First fashion, they don't make it easy for passengers.

For 27, 29, 30 & 31 Dec, there are references to "special timetables", but without any link to these timetables.

It seems you have to refer to "forthcoming timetables" for each route number and each week:
Forthcoming Timetable starting 21 Dec 2025
Forthcoming Timetable starting 28 Dec 2025

Lothian group timetables are published. Still think it quite remarkable that Christmas Day services include at least 9 journeys (basically hourly) linking Edinburgh with towns like North Berwick, Dunbar and Haddington - distances of 30 miles or so. Is there anywhere else in the UK that has better Christmas Day services linking towns and cities in the same way
Maybe not exactly the same but Brighton & Hove Buses run 12 journeys (hourly) linking Brighton and Eastbourne via Seaford on route 12, which is probably a similar length.

As @DunsBus implies, East Lothian routes are operated on behalf of the council on 25, 26 Dec & 1 Jan. Without a subsidy from a wider public budget, chances are that none of these towns would have any bus services on Christmas Day. Not sure of the funding position for Brighton or Eastbourne.

I'm just surprised Midland bluebird don't try to operate some extra buses on Boxing day and 2nd Jan to test the waters, especially since they running the X38. Maybe have the X38 extended from Linlithgow to FVRH, and maybe have one bus doing Granagemouth then another going Labart and the Hospital, plus maybe X37.

They won’t do anything unless funding becomes available from local authorities. If MB was a double digit margin business, which I doubt it is, then they could explore running the X36, X37 and maybe something to Alloa and Bo’ness on Boxing Day and 2nd Jan.

No council funding is also why there are no buses running in Midlothian on Christmas Day or in the Scottish Borders on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Ne'erday and 2nd January. Bus companies are not charities and I very much doubt there'd be sufficient passenger levels to justify running the X36/X37 commercially on Boxing Day or 2nd January.

Angus pays for a Sunday service on Boxing day and 2nd January, Fife council no longer pays for any xmas services, ( I think they know half the network covered it's cost) when stagecoach took them on, they rightly ripped out a number of pointless routes.

The Express buses can be a real money spinner on both days, I remember having to travel on X24 and it was near full one boxing day, In fact X55 was commercial will before fife council pulled the funding for other routes. I'm sure the X59 was aswell but again you could have full buses on 2nd January.

Of course Falkirk and Stirling councils never paid for services. Back in the late 90s, the Alloa - Stirling route did get boxing day bus every 3 hours from Fife Scottish as they had a Sunday timetable. I think its worth a punt to see if the basic routes could have hourly service to certain parts, I doubt Bo'ness would but 5 buses could get you Larbart, grangermouth and Maddiston.

I think most people who are knowledgeable of the bus industry know that operators aren’t charities.

This is me purely guessing but the point I was making is that the lack of service particularly on 26th and 2nd is an overall reflection of the financial performance of that operator. Some parts of Fife is a fairly similar bus operating market to Stirlingshire but Stagecoach have historically provided a decent service on said dates.

There is definitely some revenue risk involved, but a lot of the Christmas Day network is operating with some financial support from Heathrow Airport and/or local authorities.

My comment about bus companies not being charities was aimed at overthewater, as he implied that Midland Bluebird could run buses off its own back on Boxing Day. It's not that simple, of course - as you say it's all down to councils to subside them as well as the financial performance of the operators involved.

I always find it rather strange how operators outside of South East England seem to run nothing at all (or a limited special timetable) on New Years Day but yet a lot of operators in South East England treat New Years Day as a normal public holiday.
Interestingly, fledgling independent Viscount are running on both Boxing Day and New Year's Day, with the X28 having 5 journeys each way between Scarborough and Pickering/Malton.
While buses for shoppers and to hospitals are not that uncommon on Boxing Day (although East Yorkshire have stopped running any in recent years), this is the first New Year's Day service I can remember running anywhere in North Yorkshire for about 15 years, when Dalesbus had one or two routes running. Good luck to them!

Tech they could run it off thier own back, of course Falkirk nor Stirling councils have never paid for xmas services. The day of councils paying for stuff are long gone. Also I'm sure someone around here would have a few words to say about the "financial performance" of Midland bluebird since they had brought in 30 brand new electric buses.

What I suggested was they could try to test run a service, nothing to fancy, yes it a gamble, but that doesn't meant they wouldn't look into it. We don't know, if people will use it and when stagecoach took on Fife and Perthshire network commercially they quiet rightly pulled off a tone of routes.

The biggest factor that would come into play would be the fact if X38 is being run by Larbart depot, that half the battle. If the "Xmas Service" X38 is still being run by Livingston Depot then its complete non starter as Larbart wont be open for starters.

Plus you have to get the drivers on board for this, but that also seems to be a factor in this.

There are trains on Boxing day although the Hospital is some distance from Larbert Station

Transdev has published lists for services over Christmas/New Year.

Very frustrating they are giving up from the 22nd.

I can kind of understand having reduced services on the working days between Christmas and New Year but to do so in the week before is poor and going to be personally expensive to get to work.

For me, a Saturday service means a later start, but a better peak service as the same number of buses are given more time on each run on weekdays.

I suspect that based on experience there will be many fewer people working on the Monday to Wednesday as assume that schools and colleges in your area like mine will have broken up the previous Friday. What surprises me is that some operators are running a full weekday timetable on January 2nd.

According to Bee Network website all Bee Network services on Christmas Eve are planned to run to normal weekday timetable and surprisingly for Christmas Eve some (doesn't say which) are planned to finish at normal weekday finishing times, so looks like no early finishing times for services in Greater Manchester area.

They’ll be a lot of lightly loaded buses then, such as on the guideway where weekday peaks have a very high frequency in the peaks and the extra V4 journeys

A lot of waiting around as well as buses are given time for peak hour traffic

That line about some services finishing but no clarity is a bit daft with no link to anything

This would be the case in England and Wales where 2nd January is not a public holiday.

Next year (ie 2026) 2 January falls on a Friday. A number of operators are providing a Saturday service no doubt as they assume (probably correctly) that a large number of people will take the day off work and the schools won’t have returned.
