No Crosscountry trains run direct from Leeds to Doncaster.

I'm sure there are a number that do on Sundays. Basically allows them to call at more stations with fewer services (but means that northbound passengers could in theory choose to get off at Doncaster and get a NXEC service to arrive into York and the north earlier ;)).

I never said they ran Direct to Doncaster. I said most trains that go through Leeds call at Doncaster via Wakefield Westgate. Not in those words exactly, but I said it...

Can you clarify this? I am confused by what you mean.

I meant that most XC trains that go to Leeds call at Doncaster as well as Wakefield Westgate. Or vice versa going south.

oh gawd, they dont do they. tis only on Sundays that they do that. I knew what i meant:roll: ooops. Well, if they only run services mainly on a Sunday, and the services that goto York call at Doncaster, then I really dont see the problem tbh in XC stopping some services from calling at Doncaster.

The typical XC route is ....

  • Sheffield - Doncaster - York, or
  • Sheffield - Wakefield Westgate - Leeds - York

It is the former that Arriva are going to re-route via Leeds instead of going via Doncaster.

Sounds better imo. More trains for Leeds, and people really aren't going to miss out on Connections to the North really. They'll still have the same amount of trains once they reach Newcastle/York unless the NXEC train they're on goes upto Scotland.

Talking of 9xxx headcodes, today's 9S91 Plymouth to Edinburgh was delayed by 19 mins leaving Bristol Temple Meads as they put it in platform 4 and as a result it got stuck behind 1B23 (Taunton to Cardiff) - the 1619 from Temple Meads on platform 3 which they only decided to cancel at 1639!

It's managed to make itself be on time now though.

I can see opportunities for both GC and HT if DaFT force both GNER and XC go ahead with pulling out the Donny stops. In GC's case, it may provide a slightly slower journey but there's rather a lot of trade to be had...especially in the peak!

The wonderful world of slack timings.

Leeds already has a fast & frequent service to Sheffield and York.

Doncaster will be left with virtually nothing. Yet many people rely on connections at Doncaster as the lines from London, Lincoln, Cleethorpes, Hull, Selby, York, Leeds and Sheffield all converge on Doncaster.

Through passengers will find their journeys take 20 minutes longer than at present, which is totally unacceptable. This would make many Cross Country journeys slower than in the steam era.

So Scottish NEEC trains won't stop, XC running via Leeds... what do they suggest you do if you want to travel from Doncaster to Edinburgh?

TPE to Sheffield, Northern to Sheffield or Leeds, HT to Selby to connect for York by the looks of it or limited Nat Ex services to York.

Exactly, you must faff around and make your journey longer & more complicated - why should we?

I'm sure there are a number that do on Sundays.

I always assumed that it was because some form of engineering works are/were happening along the direct Sheffield-Wakefield route...

Changing the subject to the previously mentioned subject of train capacity in this thread...

It may just be me, but has anyone else noticed XC running 4-car 220's more frequently on a service booked for a 5-car 221, compared to VXC?

I've seen and heard about quite a few XC services ex Bournemouth being formed of 220's more frequently. Maybe XC isn't having a number of problems getting the 5-car sets where it wants them to be?

The 08:25 Plymouth to Edinburgh was a New XC liveried 220 this Monday as well.

The fact that a chunk of 221's went over to WC won't have helped......since previously VXC ran some 4cars on the Birmingham-Glasgow routes if 5cars were needed elsewhere due to 'known' loading issues

And we've had a number of 5-car trains on the 0700 Cardiff to Newcastle via Temple Meads lately
