Hi all,

Currently work for XC as an RSM and considering applying internally for a TM job that’s come up locally. Are there any XC TM’s on here (or actually any TM’s) that can impart any advice on what the recruitment process is? Any tests? What kind of questions are asked at the interview? And what’s the difference between a normal rail medical and a safety critical medical for TM?

Thanks in advance.

I went for an assessment day for a Train Manager post with Virgin Trains a while back. I was one of ten candidates for one role so it can be quite competitive. Sadly, I didn't get the job but to be fair all us were equally good personalities.

The assessment consisted of a role play, a group exercise and an interview. I cannot speak for Cross Country as reach TOC operates a different assessment process. Upon speaking to a couple of other forum members, there are two assessment days for the TM role with GWR!!!

If you want to message me privately I'll give you some advice about what you might get asked in the interview.

Regards

C J

Its application, then assessment day/interviews.

It will consist of the 2 assessments. Then group exercise. Then if successful its through to the interviews.

I always found xc recruitment a bit weird. They put a lot of emphasis on a group exercise and if your a loud mouth you usually go through. To me it’s a terrible way of sifting people before interview.

Thanks for the info - I’ve seen a practice paper for the assessments and they don’t look too taxing as long as you’re good with maths (my minor in my degree was maths so should be ok). Just need to polish the interview technique then... although I only had my last interview with XC last December :D
