On the face of it, it seems they don't want people who will relocate. That leaves them poaching from a limited number of TOCs, at least one or two of which are renowned for having a low turnover. They've also got no mention of SOL record on the website.

I'm still in my first year, so staying put where I am but nontheless a couple of considerations for those who do apply.

I wouldn't worry about it. They've just taken me on (Not a driver and I'm internal) and I'm relocating further than most here would be!

Also to spice things up a bit- I’ve just received word that LNER will be opening their Driver recruitment for Edinburgh!

The whole relocation matter is a strange one, the advert says that you should live within an hour of the depot you're applying for, it doesn't mention relocation. When I was looking for trainee driver roles a couple of years back, I remember SWT as it was then stating that you must either live within an hour or be willing to relocate.

I've heard that companies don't like trainees relocating because they sometimes move back to their original area with a different TOC after qualifying, or they don't relocate at all and have a dangerously long commute.

That said, I'd be surprised if someone moved for XC and then moved back to their original location a couple of years later unless they didn't like the area XC based them in. I know someone who was looking at a specific depot for an intercity TOC, took a look around the area and decided against the idea.

If I wanted to apply, I'd be tempted to contact them and ask about relocating.

Some TOCs won't take qualified drivers who are relocating, let alone trainees.

None of the above alas
LNER go to Newcastle, Aberdeen, Glasgow & Carlisle (Inverness is Newcastle drivers at present)
XC don’t do Carlisle but they do do Leeds

Curious to here how secure the XC jobs in Scotland are. They tried to pull out of Aberdeen a few years back and I've heard Aberdeen won't be part of the next franchise

Whatever you've heard about what's in or out of the next franchise is pure speculation. The new franchise that should have started in October this year has been put on hold until the upcoming rail review is finished.

The jobs are secure. If you lose Aberdeen work you'll just pick up more Leeds and Newcastles I would imagine.

It depends if more work is gained overall and that's required. The depot may lose work and shrink. No jobs lost as such, but the link will carry extra lines of A/R vice booked turns, anyone who leaves isn't replaced and the depot carries the vacancies as they have the extra spares to do so, and then at a link change, the depot is shrunk by removing the superfluous lines, with no one's job lost.
