XC Glasgow extensions from May 2011

I noticed this on the 04:28 Glasgow - Euston recently
Last year it went via Motherwell
I travelled on it two days in a row and eventually worked out it went via Holytown
No difference on the journey time compared to last year , however last year the train arrived quite early at Carlisle and sat for at least 15 minutes, this didn't happen this year

Does this service go via Mount Florida as well?

Which XCs go via Shotts?

I think it just has a lot of padding in case of diversion like the 0430 from Newcastle - Kings Cross has which sits for ages at Northallerton

It hasn't gone via Motherwell since the current timetable started
It leaves the main line at Uddingston and goes "straight on", rather than rejoining at Motherwell

Think you're getting confused between the Euston train and the 06:01 XC from Glasow to Plymouth. The XC doesn't stop at Motherwell as it "goes straight on" to the Shotts line to Edinburgh rather than via Motherwell and Carstairs.

The early Euston service might have gone via Holytown, down to Wishaw and then onto the Mainline.

As was mentioned though - as of the timetable change it appears the early XC train will once again go via Motherwell.

As also mentioned the 17:11 will run late - precedence is well and truly set on this one! I get the 15:22 EC service on a Friday usually and I struggle to remember when it was on time. It's a few minutes behind at best.

Who is getting confused?
I've only ever been on a late evening XC service out of Glasgow Central (to travel via the Edinburgh Sub)

I regularly travel on the 04:28 Glasgow - Euston, as this allows a day return to London plus two breakfasts southbound, and it is still going via Bellshill and Holytown
Equally, the tilt is turned off until rejoining the WCML at Law Junction, with no tilt as you pass Cambuslang, which any other service does

NO.

As stated in the original DfT sponsored timetable, and listed by me earlier in this thread (posts 1 and 16 with reference to XC's track access application), the East Coast through services (bar the remaining one each way) are basically replaced one for one by XC service extensions.

There was never a formal proposal to stop WCML services, it was entirely media speculation, based on a presumption that XC wasn't changing at all.

From what I see the proposed departure times from Glasgow are very much in line with the suggestions I sent to Crosscountry about possible improvements due to the lack of Crosscountry services from Glasgow to the South East/South West of England in a letter last year.In my letter I said that a few years ago there were plentiful crosscountry services but nowadays there are very few. At least these changes will go someway to alleviating these problems!

Not really as people will look at the time and fares, then compare rail against air travel
The air fare is about the same, in some cases it can be cheaper

Twenty years ago my relatives would happily have travelled from Glasgow to Plymouth, a 7 hour journey, at a total fare of £250 for four (£460 by air)
Last year they dumped the idea as there was no direct service, the total journey time was 8 hours and the fare was £350 for four (£310 by air)
It will be interesting to see what happens next summer, even with the direct service I stil suspect they will choose air over rail

Yes i agree , but its a long journey and i havent come across cheap fares . I suspect you can 'split' the fares somewhere. Air Southwest flies from Glasgow to Plymouth but it is a small airline and dont know if this route will last.

I suggested splitting the fares / journey at Birmingham New Street
However, they weren't interested in this, unless it was the same service, but as a change was required this was not the case
Personally, I would have; Glasgow - Birmingham / Birmingham - Plymouth

You could do 'megatrain' to Brum then advance fares to Plymouth . TBH i dont think there are many people going from Glasgow to Plymouth . They could run the train to Nottingham or something

I understand what you say about prices but in my opinion you have to shop around for the fares that are reasonable and at least there are no luggage restrictions on the trains!
