Occasionally I have noticed a double Voyager in the Bournemouth area. The last time was Friday 23rd. November between 2 - 3pm. I can't even recall the direction of travel.

My question is why, and does each half of the train have its own conductor?

My question is why...

Because otherwise it'd be ridiculously overcrowded. (Like many daytime services run by a single Voyager.)

There is one double Voyager diagram that goes to Bournemouth each day; other double sets tend to stay on the southwest to northeast axis. Oh, and Virgin use doubles too.

Doubling of Intercity sets is quite common on the continent. For Example TGVs, ICEs and Railjets regularly run in pairs. The formations are much longer though with doubled sets coming in at about 400m

A doubled-up TGV Duplex is quite an impressive sight!

That must have been the one I saw.

At the time of day I saw it have you any idea the direction it was going in?

This sounds a stupid question but try as I might visualise seeing it I cannot recall the direction but know it was between 2 - 3pm just east of New Milton Station.

I'm 90% sure it's the 1345 off Bournemouth, (1415 off Southampton) to Man Picc which is usually a double unit. Runs something like Mon, Thur and Fri, so not every day. If not that one it's an hour later!

There used to be more doubles down this way, but I think they stopped when the 2 hourly Southampton extras came in a couple of years ago.

Ideally there'd be a Train Manager in both units, occasionally there'll be an RPI. The bare minimum is to have a member of catering staff in one set, and the TM in the other. The catering crew acts as a 'competent person'. Hope this answers the OP's question.

A Double ICE-T feels very very long when your coach is furthest from the buffers - it was a late formation change (due to festival crowds) so the Waganstandanzeiger wasn't much help ;)

I observed 220005 and 220018 working the 1445 Bournemouth to Manchester on Friday 17th August. Don't know whether this is regularly booked for a double Voyager?

Might well be - I wasn't too sure about it being the 1345 - but it's one or the other.
