My daughter had to stand along with many, many others on her most recent trip from Reading to Chesterfield. Both Cross Country trains she used, by changing at Birmingham were crush loaded and she couldn’t access her reserved seats.

She bought an off peak return with her railcard as split tickets only saves coppers so she went for the flexible travel option.
Basically her travel options are hourly, changing at New Street. I have looked at Real Time Trains but can’t seem to find a symbol that indicates whether a double (8/9) car set is allocated to any of the following services:

Fridays:
1016, 1116, 1216, 1316, 1416, 1516 Reading to Birmingham
1203, 1403, 1503, 1603, 1703 Birmingham to Chesterfield

Sundays
1308, 1508, 1608, 1708, 1808 Chesterfield to Birmingham
1504, 1604, 1704, 1804, 1904, 2004 Birmingham to Reading

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

The 1603 from Birmingham to Edinburgh is booked a HST on weekdays. Sundays ultimately will depend on engineering works.

Don't get the 13:15 from Reading on a weekdays whilst it's booked for a 5-car Voyager - 7 times since the May 2022 timetable that's been reported rammed!

So seven days in one-hundred-and-seventy it's been reported busy?

I was actually trying to give advice so the persons daughter didn't have to be almost guaranteed to stand from Reading to Birmingham. I wouldn't recommend it with 5 coaches anyway.

This is what they are diagrammed to be:

Fridays:
1016(8), 1116(9), 1216(9), 1316(5), 1416(8), 1516(8) Reading to Birmingham
1203(5), 1403(8), 1503(9), 1603(9), 1703(5) Birmingham to Chesterfield

Sundays
1308(9), 1508(5), 1608(9), 1708(9), 1808(9) Chesterfield to Birmingham
1504(9), 1604(9), 1704(9), 1804(9), 1904(8), 2004(8) Birmingham to Reading

Most are 8/9 not that many booked to be 5 cars, but at least you will know which ones to avoid.

Slight correction - 16:03 on Fridays is a 7-coach HST.
