As part of the big disruption due to engineering works at the north end of Sheffield from 2-6 Feb 2026, some Crosscountry trains are running via Rotherham Central, Woodburn Jn (reverse) and Beighton, e.g these on 3rd via RTT:

Evidently no-one thought it worthwhile route learning from Masbrough Jn to Beighton, which would have saved a few miles, some time, and the reversal at Woodburn Jn.

Apart from those, there are some XC from the south terminating at Sheffield with buses onwards. But it’s a relatively thin service on the ECML section, basically just those which are being diverted past Sheffield, mostly every 2 hours with a few extras in hours in between. Not sure if everything is loaded yet, as I can only see XC buses from Doncaster to Sheffield, and nothing in the other direction

XC’s page of explanations at:

Meanwhile Northern have various services terminating at Meadowhall or Rotherham C.

Everyone bar the company thought it was the right thing to do, but it's obviously a cost thing, the solution they've come up with involves no route learning costs.
The reason I believe the service has been thinned out is that only Leeds crews sign the route from Woodburn Jct to Rotherham Central.

Due to the requirement to stay on path, it also means that all (except for the last service towards Birmingham, basically) services doing this diversion skip Chesterfield.

I am curious if either of you work in a relevant part of XC or NR? and are therefore informed on the matter. Because otherwise such sweeping generalisations are a) really rather insulting for all those involved (at all stages) in producing the timetable, and b) make you look wonderfully ignorant and misinformed.

Harsh. Thanks.
I accept I could have phrased it better than “no-one thought”. Perhaps “evidently the direct route was ruled out, which would have involved route learning from Masbrough Jn to Beighton but would have saved a few miles, some time, and the reversal at Woodburn Jn.
Evidently = making an assumption from the evidence available.

It takes a lot for a TOC to route learn for engineering works now. Route conducting is easier and quicker.

You are entirely welcome, and yes that would be somewhat less insulting.

If one was actually interested in understanding why a particular may, or may not have been chose, they could for instance phrase it as an enquiry. And that enquiry could easily include the same assumption, but would significantly mitigate the risks of appearing as described.

The paths on RTT are very unlikely to inform any of what options were available during the work which produced those paths. Therefore, your 'evident' assumption is just an opinion.

Well, I'm neither ignorant or misinformed, as an XC Driver I'm involved, we were originally lead to believe we'd be route learning Beighton Jct - Masborough, many of us previously signed it,but that turned out not to be the case, I can only surmise this was a cost issue.
The fact that only Leeds crews sign the entire diversionary route would back up the claim about costs.

Only Leeds crews manning the diversions,no conducting required.

Considering the reversal at Woodburn Junction are services going to be limited to 4 or 5 coaches, or will there still be some 8 coach services through the diversion?

What seems to be most strange that despite all the route and track rationalisation that has been undertaken in the Sheffield / Rotherham areas it is still possible to "Get through" from Rotherham Central via Woodburn Jnc into Sheffield. And real time trains shows that services are proposed to operate from Sheffield to places such as Lincoln I believe going via Nunnery Main Line Junction.

So I am wondering if this reversal at Woodburn Jnc so avoiding Sheffield is all about XC not wanting to carry Leeds / Wakefield customers to Sheffield...

As yet there seems to be no indication if customers from places like Barnsley will after alighting at Meadowhall be allowed to continue on the Tram to Sheffield with rail ticket acceptance in place

I'm not sure what you're getting at here.
Under normal circumstances trains can leave via the north end of Sheffield station towards both Meadowhall and Woodburn Jn.
However for about a week in early February the north end of Sheffield is completely blocked. No trains can enter or leave the station from the Meadowhall or Woodburn Jn direction.
Buses replace trains between Meadowhall/Rotherham/Lincoln and Sheffield.
Some cross country trains will divert from Aldwarke Jn via Rotherham Central, Woodburn Jn (reverse), Woodhouse and Beighton Jn to Chesterfield.

I have just looked on RTT and on the Monday the only northern services are buses to and from Sheffield.

So they don't. Although thinking about it, adding a Rotherham stop for the duration would have allowed connections to/from Sheffeild using the tram
I think Rotherham platforms only accommodate 4 car units, no good for 5 car Voyagers or double sets as they don't have SDO (selective door opening)

If I remember correctly, you can't get to the Masborough to Beighton line from Rotherham Central. The two options from Rotherham Central are via Meadowhall or down the back to Woodburn.

Northern services are terminating at Rotherham Central, not at Meadowhall. The only trains at Meadowhall are from the Barnsley direction.

So I'm guessing the line at Masborough will be closed too.

Maybe not: there’s freight scheduled over it, for example a rerouted Tinsley to Bardon Hill, which normally goes Tinsley-Woodburn Jn-Sheffield-Chesterfield etc. Here rerouted Tinsley-Rotherham C-Kilnhurst (run round)- Masborough-Beighton-Chesterfield etc.

Seems like the Northern Scarborough services are picking up the stops between Doncaster-Rotherham and feeding into and out of buses (?and trams - are tickets going to be accepted?) there instead of Meadhowhall.

Rail Replacement Buses now provided between Sheffield and Meadowhall

Unlikely to add a stop given apparently Chesterfield calls have been removed as per Post 3 above.

At Meadowhall you can reverse from the Barnsley direction without shunting. Unfortunately Shunting is required from the Rotherham direction which I would think is in the possession. As for XC reversing at Woodburn Jn that may have more been a requirement in relation to Stocksbridge works (how long has that been closed) and thus access required to it, these possessions are likely to have been planned sometime ago with access required on weekdays and maybe Saturdays for said traffic. XC have just piggybacked on it to avoid the route learning costs on the top section of the Barrow Hill route most likely.

The reversals at Woodburn Jct won't be using the Stocksbridge line, services will use the Down Worksop line that's nearest to the tram depot.

I wasn't suggesting what line XC would be using merely that they have piggybacked on the fact the route is open for the (steel) works traffic between Barrow Hill Lines and Stocksbridge due to the Works that was there.

The Stocksbridge line has been mothballed since September 2024, the last steel train ran a year or so before that, so has nothing to do with the diversion route.
The only reason they're going the way they are is current route knowledge, if the XC crews signed the route between Beighton Jct and Masborough Station Jct the diversions would have gone that way.

Anyone know what work is happening in Sheffield - a week is a long time to close the Northern approach. It affects both Nunnery and Attercliffe lines.

Plain old renewal or anything better?

There's plenty news out there about a 2 days job in march south of Sheffield.. but nothing I can see about this 5 day job!

The job in March is replacement of the 1904 bridge across the River Sheaf north of Dore & Totley station alongside the Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet. Most of D & T's car park is now closed until Easter to prepare for that.

Plain line track renewal at/around Attercliffe.

It is a bit strange there have been no comms about it, at least that I've seen..

Thanks - must be overlapping with the Nunney mainline Jct if it's closed that long??

I just keep hoping for incremental improvements to the approach.. or even station trackwork. :(

Actual renewals is for about a mile around 159-160 miles. 159 miles is just after Nunnery Main Line Jn and 160 miles is just before Mill Race Jn (I believe..)
Protection limits always add a bit more on, so the limit is Sheffield North Jn - there are some other bits & bobs going on within the limits, inspections, maintenance, etc..
