So if taken literally all the retired HSTs will get a direct replacement. But time will tell in this is waffle or fact
They will apparently, despite all the will they/won't they, DfT intransigence etc etc - but it seems XC will finally get additional trainsets of some description.

The delay now is reputedly the DfT costing whether the ex-Avanti 221s or modifying the 222s is the option they prefer.

I wonder if the rumoured rebranding of crosscountry will be coming with this award. Seems plausible if they are doing a full refurb on the 221s.

Well let's hope if its 222s they re seat them like a 220 or 221 . The seating on 222s is abysmal, wouldn't fancy a 4 hour journey on one of those!

Given the interest in the 222s by Transport Scotland and the additional work required, I'd expect 222s to be the more expensive option but what one expects and the reality often don't match up.

Could the currently off-lease Avanti 221's be the first to be refurbished and introduced, then rotating with the current XC 22X fleet to enable them to be withdrawn for refurbishment in turn?

Interesting that the article states the following:

"Under the new contract, CrossCountry is also planning enhancements to its timetable, including a new daily direct service between Cardiff and Edinburgh. The company will also explore the reintroduction of services between Cambridge and Stansted Airport, strengthening connections across Great Britain."

Now, it's services between Birmingham and Stansted Airport are stopping at Cambridge, as does the XC services from Bristol Temple Meads, So is this going to be extra services to those services travelling between Cambridge and Stansted Airport? If so, with what stock will XC provide these services?

I am also presuming that the Cardiff - Nottingham services will be extended to Edingburgh? If so I would imagine these services moving from being class 170 turbostar service, to be being class 22x service, so this makes me think that the Avanti class 221 units may move to XC, if was not for the fact of the Avanti Cardiff and Yorkshire, the North East and Edinburgh services from December 2024. Unless, the Avanti class 221 units move to XC and the class 222 units move to Avanti West Coast. So what does Scotrail do about replacing their HST trains? The only other answer would be for Avanti to be ordering more class 805 units to do the Cardiff to Yorkshire, North East to Edingburgh services?

Pre 2020 weren’t there a couple of short workings in the very early morning, where they made a short Cambridge to Stansted run before entering the normal pattern? Or did they never begin operating at all?

I wouldn’t see this alone as indicating anything of major significance.

Refurb of existing units with passenger counting equipment.

Does this mythological equipment actually work. I say this as the class 172 fleet has it fitted yet the West Midlands Combined Authority persist on having army's of people counting how many passengers are in each vehicle of each train on quite a regular basis. When I say counting some have 6 cricket score counters held together on wooden contraptions to keep score and 2 shifts cover from start of day to end of day.

I doubt very much that the current Cardiff to Nottingham service would be extended to Edinburgh. As I and others have said elsewhere it would seem more likely that one of the existing early morning Bristol to Edinburgh trains would start back at Cardiff. (Reverse in the evenng)

I'd assume the Cambridge-Stansted Airport comment probably means the extension of services that currently terminate at Cambridge to stanstead airport.

There were some units that came of the Cambridge depot, and then ran in service to Stansted airport, and then took up the normal pattern to Birmingham from there in the morning. I'd assume similarly, the last (last few?) services to Stansted would presumably have run in service from Stansted to Cambridge, as that is where the depot is, though possibly they just ended at Cambridge coming from Birmingham.

Is that no longer happening, and does the first departure from Stansted Airport have to come (in service) all the way from Birmingham?

That does happen - first and last few stansted trains are to/from Cambridge. I think the main difference to precovid is the extension to Stansted is roughly every 2 hours rather than hourly.

Not at all sure, now I’ve checked on RTT. I suppose it could just be filling in the existing gaps to give an hourly service all day.

There are already services in the morning such as the 5:15 am arrival at Stansted Airport from Cambridge and 5:27am departure, with arrival at 5:50am from Cambridge with 06:12 departure. These services this morning having been run by 170637 & 170102 doing the services from Cambridge and then returning.

Some of the current services though from Bristol Temple Meads start from either Penzance or Plymouth to Edingburgh, so are we saying that there would be removal of some services in the South West? Unless you mean that the class XC 170 Turbostar service from Bristol Temple Meads to Cardiff, which happens once a day departing BTM at 05:20 and then this service travels to Edingburgh from Cardiff?

No. I mean there is currently a 07.35 Bristol to Edinburgh train. This could start back from Cardiff at around 06.30.

If the Cardiff-Edinburgh service is once or twice as day in each direction as suggested, that would presumably mean extending som of the services that started from Bristol TM, rather than the ones that came from the Southwest proper

Greater Anglia's relatively recent extension of Norwich trains to Stansted hourly has helped spread the loadings and add contingency, but it basically only runs to/from Stansted from 9-5. Early services to the airport for early flights would be a real improvement.

But there would be no reason for the train to travel down to Bristol Temple Meads from Cardiff, to then go north, which means that at Bristol Temple Meads, it will see less XC services, due to the services moving to start at Cardiff Central.

There would be a reason to go to Bristol to serve Bristol. If I remember correctly this was indeed the case until a few years ago.

It was, there was an 0520 Bristol TM to Cardiff which returned as an 0700 Cardiff to Manchester via Bristol TM. Specifically there to provide capacity between Newport and Bristol in the morning peak. (Which shouldn’t really have been XC’s problem to solve, in my opinion.)

Re Extra Stansted services...

No additional stock required, but additional traincrew is. Since Covid Birmingham crews have lost route knowledge and don't go past Cambridge. Only Cambridge currently sign Cambridge to the airport.

Modern Railways reporting XC to receive seven ex-Avanti 221s once the 805s are in service:

CrossCountry will augment its fleet with additional Voyagers, refurbish its fleets and introduce a new direct service between Cardiff and Edinburgh as part of a new National Rail Contract, agreed between the Department for Transport and Arriva Group.
The NRC will start on 15 October and will run for up to eight years, with a guaranteed core term of four years to 2027. Arriva has operated CrossCountry since November 2007, and following an initial long contract has operated services under a series of shorter deals, most recently a three-year Operating Contract Franchise Agreement which began in October 2020.
Following the withdrawal of its HSTs, CrossCountry is to take on seven additional Class 221s released by Avanti West Coast following the arrival of new Hitachi trains there, adding to the 58-strong fleet of Class 220s and Class 221s CrossCountry already operates. The last regular service run for an HST with CrossCountry was on 18 September from Plymouth to Leeds, with a farewell tour from Leeds to Swanage to follow on 26 September.
A full fleet refurbishment is planned for both the Voyagers and the 29 Class 170 Turbostars. Arriva says this will include fitting CCTV, automatic passenger counting equipment, new carpets and LED lighting, although it is understood the final scope of the refurbishment is yet to be agreed. Owner Beacon Rail is to appoint a contractor for the Voyager refurbishment, while CrossCountry has been working with Porterbrook to develop the scope of an upgrade for the ‘170s’.
Timetable enhancements are also planned, building on the May 2023 timetable, which included a step-up in CrossCountry services on long-distance routes. A new daily direct service between Cardiff and Edinburgh is to be introduced in December 2024, with the aim of strengthening connections across Britain. Also planned is the restoration of an hourly service to and from Stansted Airport, while CrossCountry is to study future opportunities for its regional routes operated by Class 170s.

Let's hope this time it's a decent refurbishment.

Will be interesting what happens to the remaining 221s, whether they've been earmarked for Grand Central or if only 7 are expected to be released soon. 807s seem to be lagging behind the 805s so I wouldn't be suprised if AWC couldn't release more than 9 total for now.

Seems its already being discussed in the other thread here:

I’d have hoped for some explicit news about restoration of Reading-Newcastle.
I have a feeling this will be one of the services to go in the long run, except maybe a daily service each way. It would free up several sets to make doubles and with the current cost-cutting it seems plausible. The Manchester to Bristol route again is another example of a potential one for the chop, again leaving just a sole daily service each way. This could include a firm end of trains to Newquay/Bath Spa among others, and also likely seeing extensions to Paignton go as well. Not to forget potentially all extensions beyond Edinburgh going as well.

The Cardiff-Edinburgh service I suspect will form a part of the major recast we can expect to see on the East Coast Mainline and might not necessarily be a divert of say 1S35/1V70, which on paper are probably the most likely from the current timetable. I also wouldn’t rule out an extension of 1S33 to start from Cardiff with a tie up at New Street to make a double set as well.

If you look at the numbers of cutting the above, it must free up at least 5-6 sets to make doubles. I was told last week that there are sufficient spares to use for the HST replacements (which annoyingly is only 2 sets) and you’ve also got the 7 from Avanti coming too. I have a feeling the last of the spare 221’s will likely end up with Grand Central in time, with the 222’s still a potential option later on.
