Just wanted a bit of information about interview questions for the Customer Relations Consultant Position at XC. Have an assessment and have never had a rail company interview before and was looking for some pointers if anyone has any???

Alas I'm not sure what they'll ask aside from the obvious - make sure you've read up on what routes XC serve because they're bound to ask you about that, and what you know about the company.

I keep getting as far as assessments and dropping a clanger at the group discussion stage - been in there twice now, they say keep trying as they like me apparently and you should get it right eventually, but I've not got enough annual leave to keep going to interviews at present!

What your assessment pack says is correct, there's a numeracy test, a letter writing test, and a group discussion. If you pass, you go through to interview. Group discussion is by far the trickiest, the other two are common sense. It's basic interpretation from the assessors that says whether you pass or fail from the discussion.

Do not get downhearted about failing the group discussion stage, especially in the case of two 'ex intercity' companies.

They both use this pointless exercise to avoid being accused of favouritism or unfair recruitment. You could score excellent at the assessments and in most peoples view be the best at the group discussion, however these two companies have for years used it to ensure friends of friends, relatives, or people with long legs get the job.

thanks for the posts. Ihad my assessment yesterday. Went well I think was 10 to start an i was in the remaining 5 for interview but with 1 position available and the sister of the interviewer was a candidate I am doubtful the descion will be fair to be honest. Was a nice day though and ill let you know the outcome. The math test was a little tough too 45 questions in 12 mins phew ... lmao I got to q26 so It aint that important.

I have heard about so many times its about who you know not what you know!! It is always a worry when you turn up to an assessment day and see a fellow candidate chatting away to the HR/Manager like they have known them for years because they have, the loud lauging and banter between them. I imagine the person told you about their sister conducting the Interview without a hint of irony. They of course get around it legally by saying that you were unsuitable for the role for x,y,z reason but their always is that lingering doubt in your mind when you are privvy to that sort of information. Sorry to be negative but I personally have been unsuccessful as a candidate in the past due to similar circumstances.

I agree with the last post. The first host position went to someone totally unsuitable without any customer experience apart from loading food onto a voyager. This I found out from a friend who knows the guy. He agreeded with me that XC only recruit from within for key posts such as this. They advertise to see what 'fish they can get in their net'.

Again from an inside source there is no professionalism within the Company when it comes to recruitment and the whole experience is a farce.

Fortunately I have been recruited by a decent Company whose recruitment is fair and honest.
