Recently XC were recruiting for a position. I had a letter rejecting my application saying that on this occasion they decided to recruit from an internal pool. However I could ask for feedback.

My question is simple. What is the point of advertising for a position if they are going to recruit internally?

It's a common thing with many companies, not just in the rail industry, to advertise outside and internally, and most of the time internal applications will be favoured. Part of the problem is that I don't think companies are actually allowed to just advertise internally, but there is nothing at all to stop them favouring internal candidates. I know my company recently advertised two positions, one lower management and one senior management, and although both were advertised externally and we did have external applications AFAIK all the interviews were internal, in fact for the senior management position is was pretty much a formality (still applied though).

Providing feedback I presume means they will let you know how you would have done had they decided to take external candidates. Of cource sometimes you get lucky and find that they they haven't got enough internal applications, or they are not up to standard.

CrossCountry and Virgin are the worst for doing this unfortunately.

XC advertised a job three days after offering the post to an internal transfer candidate. Thousands of applicants took perhaps two hours each to fill in and send off the form just for them to all get slung in the bin.

Simple fact is try any other company, just avoid XC or VT as they still don't recruit fairly.

Ouch that is bad, I really went to town on my application all for nothing so it seems. It won't stop me having another go when a suitable position comes up.

I also note that you can't type your application and that you have to print off the 7 pages and write them individually.
