Maybe I've been slow to cotton on to this, but I only discovered this week that the standard walk-up 'Anytime' fare on the only two daily CrossCountry services between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh is just £1.80! That's almost a tenth of the cheapest offered by ScotRail either via Shotts or Falkirk (£10.30 off-peak) and about a sixth of the cheapest EC fare (£6.90).

True, two services a day isn't that helpful, but considering the early morning and evening times, they've suddenly made day trips across the central belt a little more affordable...

Current times:

ex-GLC: 06.00 & 09.00 Mon-Fri, 07.00 & 09.00 Sat, 11.37 & 13.45 Sun; ex-EDB: 19.03 & 21.12 Mon-Fri, 19.07 & 21.10 Sat, 12.07, 20.07 & 21.11 Sun

1st class is only 2.50...gotta be the lowest first class fare in the country surely? Also this is more amazing given the two morning services are peak services!!

Although all on-board catering is EDB-based, so no snacks, beverages, newspaper etc. The last two evening trips I've made on these trains have also passed without a single ticket inspection, so you may get away without a ticket.

Birmingham New Street - Adderley Park or Duddeston takes 5 minutes and costs £2.10 (single).

City Thameslink and London Blackfriars are just over 1 minute/a quarter-mile apart and such a journey costs £3 (single) - not the cheapest, but it is particularly pointless.

Heathrow Express only allow free inter-terminal transfers in 'Express' (i.e. Standard) Class, but technically there's no First Class fare for such a journey.
