I'd been led to believe that before XC could run anything longer than three car Turbostars to Stansted Airport, their platform would need to be extended. I was a bit surprised then on my home last night to see a double two-car formation, something I've never seen before down this way, speed south as I cycled north. Has there been work done? Has there been a recalculation? Or did it use one of the "Stansted Express" platforms?

Also, subject to other clearances, would that mean that a four car Voyager would theoretically fit at Stansted?

Nothing has been done to extend the platform at Stansted Airport, you most likely saw a failed unit with another attached, or it's used to get two units down to Cambridge for the next mornings services.

Not supposed to a pair of units through Stansted Tunnel without a through corridor either.

Wouldn't have thought it was a failed unit or being used to get a unit down- theis was about 5:15pm and south of Cambridge, heading twoards the airport. Nowehere to leave a failure south of there. Wasn't able to tell from where I was (the "genome" path, and cycling hard) if all engines were working and whether there were passengers in both units- but it was so obviously odd (I encounter the same service at about the same place every day).

Maybe they're going for more interior work (originally Clacton) or somewhere else, as 170/1s only have bins in the centre vehicle, so 170111-117 have none!!! Seems odd they'd send 2. Before now the Central services have been platformed in 1 or 3, just not very often.

How would the driver get back to his home depot? one takes the other down.

Would also seem a bit odd to send them down in the path of a scheduled train, and paths in either direction along the Lea Valley limited at peak times.

So why do SWT send a 455 down to Bomo to pick another one up/ drop one off and take it back to Wimbledon then, oh yeah it is cheaper and more convenient/ reliable as the paths are already in the working timetable.

It's an absolute bloody nightmare when an XC Turbo sits down at the airport. They can run right up to the stops on the longer P1 or P3 provided the unit is shut down on arrival, but the last time it happened when I was there XC control told their driver to stop parallel with the stops on P2. Result? 1 x dead Turbo in P2 + 1 x healthy Turbo at the country end of P3 leaving us just P1 for 4 x StanEx + 1 x Stratford per hour.

It was south of Cambridge, nearing Shelford, heading southbound.
