It might help to understand which gateline you were tailgating through. Aside from that, you should be aware that TfL policy seems to be to prosecute all cases of fare evasion including misuse of gatelines. They don't settle out of court and would not see your ticket from Chelmsford as any sort of mitigating factor.

If you are over 18 there is a fairly certain prospect of being convicted in the Magistrates’ Court for this I’m afraid. TfL prosecute about 20,000 people every year.

If you didn't tap in at North Greenwich then you should have just tapped out at the end of the journey as normal, then logged onto the TfL website and manually completed the journey. For contactless payments you can do this twice a month, more than that or if its a complicated one you need to contact them.

By deliberately trying to evade the fare by tailgating its likely you'll get a fine.

If the gates at North Greenwich were open for crowd control purposes then it may well have auto-completed the journey anyway, with signs telling you to walk through without tapping.

Indeed all you needed to do was tap out and chances are you'd have been charged the correct fare. (If it knows you travelled to North Greenwich using the same card, when it's crowded for an event they leave the gates open and simply assume your next journey is one leaving from that station.)

And for the future, take note that tickets only allow you to make the journey once, and once you begin using the return portion the outward portion has no remaining validity.
- You used part of the return portion already from Liverpool St to Stratford earlier? Then you can't use it a second time from Liverpool St to Stratford before continuing on to Chelmsford. Did you re-use it to get home perhaps?
- You already used the outward portion to get to Liverpool St earlier? You can't use it a second time to arrive at Liverpool St. Nor can you use it after you already began using the return portion.

Was the ticket from Chelmsford a printed one with a magnetic stripe? Or digital that gets scanned?

What route did you take from the o2 to Liverpool Street? The Central Line doesn't seem the obvious choice to me?

Is there a reason why you didn't go from North Greenwich to Stratford to pick up your train there?

It was a digital ticket

There will be a simple record of every time and place you scanned it. So you need to try to remember what this, taken together with the card you were touching with, will show about your travels and whether mentioning it might get you into bigger trouble by suggesting that other parts of the journeys you made were not paid for. Did the inspector take a picture (or note details of) the digitial ticket? They may also look at previous tickets you bought for similar anomalies.
