Out of interest, between Lincoln and Barnetby there are some modern signs that have something like X49 written on them, repeatedly down the line side...what is this meant to indicate?

Are they near level crossings?

But i think just after them, as in the sign is facing just after said crossing. Are we closer to solving the riddle?

It gives the number for the crossing? I think it had the same number for a load of them though.

It's a speed limit for trains running 'wrong line' over said level crossing afaik! Presumably to allow sufficient time for them to lower(?)

You'll probably find most are X45

As stated above, it's the wrong direction permissible speed over a level crossing fitted with wrong direction controls.
