I would like to travel from Wymondham (WMD) to Lowestoft (LWT) and return the same day via Norwich (NRW) and Ipswich (IPS). This will involve travelling from WMD to NRW, NRW to IPS and then IPS to LWT. On the way back, I will get a train from LWT to IPS, IPS to NRW and NRW to WMD.

I misread what you posted earlier. Thanks for the clarification, I loved how you said "Oops."

No problem. I think you understood my reply correctly, but that I was wrong.

The Anglia Day ranger would be more expensive, but it does let you go lots of other places too.

Can't be bothered to be honest, I'll confine my journey to just the one. Now I know that the site you gave me (which is an unofficial version of National Rail Enquiries) allows travel via that route on a Wymondham to Lowestoft (Via Norwich) ticket but can you please confirm whether this is valid according to the routing guide? Failing that I would appreciate it if another user could help.

If I do the search for Wymondham to Lowestoft via Ipswich at www.greateranglia.co.uk it only gives me £11 single tickets.

The routing guide at http://data.atoc.org/rp_calc says that Wymondham and Lowestoft both have Norwich as a routing point. Page F7 of http://iblocks-rg-publication.s3-website-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/nrg_detail.pdf says

If there is a common routeing point, the permitted route is the shortest route or a route which is longer by no more than 3 miles. Also permitted is the route followed by direct trains to and from the common routeing point if the journey is made on those trains

Going from Norwich to Lowestoft via Ipswich is more than 3 miles further than the direct trains, so its not a valid route.

As I understand it, you can use the £11 single ticket, because their WWW site sells it to you for that itinerary. It would be good to print out the itinerary too.

Fair point but that's solely due to it not being possible to do it in one day according to the itinerary it uses. This oddly enough involves double backing between Norwich and Ipswich instead of using one of the East Suffolk lines to go from IPS direct to LWT. I was able to get the GA website to offer me an Off-Peak Day Return once I selected the "Open Return" option. The only question is could I do the journey in a day using my route? I believe the answer is yes as the NRE website says I can.

Your route is not permitted on this fare as the itinerary does not give you the direct route between Ipswich and Lowestoft. You'll have to go straight back to Norwich to proceed.

Your route is also not permitted according to the Routeing Guide.

Fair point. I will point out that this is the itinerary on the GA website. Funnily enough the itinerary on the NRE website does give me the direct route between Ipswich and Lowestoft.

With the through fare mentioned above?

Do you have a screenshot as I am struggling to get the same result.

Yes, I kid you not. :D I won't be posting a screenshot on the forum as yorkie's already sent us a PM to explain this glitch.

It's just the latest mistake in SilverRail's implementation of the Routeing Guide to be discovered.

I'm sure SilverRail, as with all other suppliers, will monitor this forum and they will surely take steps to fix the error in IPTIS.

And if they don't spot it, I'm sure it will be reported to them by RDG and/or Greater Anglia anyway.

That's the problem with publishing details of an error or loophole: you may only be able to use it once. In fact I've known people discover a good value fare, post about it, and then never be able to use it, as it's been fixed before they could make the purchase!

If you have an itinerary issued by the retailer who sold you the ticket, the itinerary was issued in conjunction with your ticket at the time of purchase, this must be accepted as a valid itinerary (as stated on NRE and as per contract and consumer laws).

Out of curiosity which tickets should I use to do this journey after they fix this error? I presume the best tickets would be a Wymondham to Stowmarket return followed by a Stowmarket to Lowestoft return?

I have an answer to my own question, I could just buy a return ticket to Melton (Suffolk)!
