I think you meant "defuse", not "diffuse". But neither seems appropriate here, as the former anticipates an escalating conflict!

Yes this is correct. I take full responsibility and would like to do whatever possible to rectify this. I am extremely grateful for the advice given to me this far and would be grateful for any more insights on how best to diffuse this situation. I am happy to any amount that the train company deem appropriate and realise how utterly foolish my judgement in this matter was

apols if you have already done this but one practical thing you can do is buy a railcard now if you are entitled to one, then you can say (in replies you need to send etc) you have taken practical action to 'change your behaviour' - you should do this ASAP - as they say actions speak louder than words as it were.
