Wrong train on tv show

Good evening, Did anyone see BBC1 New Tricks last Monday? there was a flash back to a supposed rail journey from London Charing Cross to Dover in about 2004 ish. The pictures shown though appeared to be a MK 3 or 125 or 225 inter-city style First class open coach and similar style buffet car. These never ran on that line which at the time would of either been slam door EMUs or coaches similar to those used today. Maybe me just being fussy.

It is a shame. There are a few organisations who own Southern Region slammers which are in working order and I'm sure they could use the pocket money from filming.

Yes but it can be a lot of money to pay out to get it authentic, and for what, to please a minority of viewers who will notice it. It's a very common issue on the TV and in films, and not just rail either, Air and Buses suffer as bad. It's not often bad research as in just not bothering to research because they don't think it matters, and to 90% of the audience it doesn't.

I noticed that as well and it did make it a bit unrealistic. I thought it was an EC HST.

Nope that's definitely an EMT HST the IC70 seats (as well as the moquette and head rests) give it away as being an EMT set. The only chance for it being EC is if they got the former EMT set that has been recently transferred across to EC, but that seems unlikely.

Just for comparison, this is an EMT TFO and this is an EC TFO.

Mk.1 Ford Granadas, Audi Quattros, Mk. 2 Jags, Velocette 'Noddy Bikes', they're all in keeping with the period and/or they're carefully chosen to establish character. So why is the same care not always, in fact really never, taken with railways?

The Hastings thumper has a BIG buffet car and has a more authentic Southern feel. If the programme needed lots of exterior shots it might have looked a little too retro in Southern Green though

For authenticity in this case, a 375 would have been the common option. They might have got away with a CEP* or (cutting it fine) a VEP. Neither of these carried buffets.

I suppose as far as authenticity is concerned they were on shakey ground anyway as buffet cars were withdrawn from the South Eastern division in 1983 (I believe) !

I should point out that the Thumper also currently includes a CEP carriage.

Cars as you say are quite often used to establish character, and often play a relatively major part in the program, whereas trains tend to be more of a background feature and generally play a much smaller part.

What he's like in real life is irrelevant. Being nice in real life doesn't justify being disrespectful to others on here.

I think to most viewers a 'train is a train' regardless if its unrealistic.


I remember watching a programme based in the 60s once, and some modern Ford Transits and Range Rovers were parked in the street. Now that is somthing people will notice!

Size. It is much easier to preserve and run road vehicles, so there tend to be more oldies about. For rail, you not only need the right train, you need access to one of a fairly limited number of running locations, together with associated staff. Co-ordinating that with production schedules is not always possible.

It would also likely cost loads, whereas someone from a TV production company can go on a car forum and get a huge number of people who will happily supply their vehicle for free to get the fame of having their pride and joy featured on TV/film!
