Location
Wrexham/ Denbighshire /Flintshire triangle
who gave permission to single the line between Wrexham and Chester, I refer to page 242 Annual Minutes of Wrexham Maelor District Council, 13th September 1983

Item 395, WMBC received a letter from the Welsh Office, informing of BRs plans to proceed with the singling of the Wrexham/Chester Railway Line, which it was claimed would achieve considerable savings on the cost of new bridges required in connection with the proposed A.483
Wrexham/Pulford bypass which crosses the railway in two places.
Commenting on this the Chief Executive Officer had not at any time been informed of the plan to single the line and he deplored the way in which
This decision had been made and the total lack of consultation that had taken place with WMDC.
He noted the decision to single the line would now be discussed by the
Appropriate Committee of Clwyd County Council following representations by the Chairman of the Chester/Wrexham/Shrewsbury
Rail action Committee and other Wrexham Members serving on the County Council.
It was resolved that the Chief Executive Officer, in consultation with the Chairman, be authorised to take any action considered to fight the plan
To single the Chester to Wrexham railway line.

Wrexham Evening Leader 14th September 1983 reports.
My Sydney Tongue,CEO of WMDC launched a scathing attack on elements of Clwyd County Council,He told the Councils policy & Resources Committee, he was on the warpath over the manner in which
BRs plans to single the line had been handled.
He attacked the County Council for raising no apparent objections to the BR plan which he claimed would have a devastating affect on Wrexham.
“During discussions with County Council Officers,we all agreed upgrading of rail services in the County was essential but, going on unkown to us has been this agreement between Clwyd County Council,British Rail and the Welsh Office to single this track”.
Mr Tongue went on “The thing that staggers me is that WMDC had no opportunity for consulatation,That this decision was taken behind the backs of WMDC is deplorable” Why should someone else take the decision on the grounds of saving £800K on road bridges & underpasses. His outburst was enthusiastically endorsed by all Wrexham Councillors.

Wrexham Leader Jan 10th 1986 reports
Railmen met in Chester last night, to discuss action following the start of
BR last weekend on singling the track.
Gangs of NUR workmen began removing crossovers even though their unions National Executive had asked men not to cooperate.
Wrexham Leader Jan 31st 1986 reports.
In two hours of talks at Wrexham Guildhall NUR leaders failed to persuade Clwyd CC & Cheshire CC Councillors to come up with
The cash to reverse the singling. Wrexham MP John Marick was also present.

So there we have it, The £800K was saved within the two Counties.
Now its £27M to sort it out, the £165K I mentioned earlier was just the
Bridge at Gresford. This just confirmed what I thought went 20 years ago.
