Something of a hiccup on W&S services today, 19th November, apparently...

67015 was at Wrexham with severe wheelflats and restricted to running at 35mph - it seems it has gone to Crewe IEMD for attention. This left things out of kilter, so 1J82, 12:17 Marylebone to Shrewsbury was worked by a Chiltern 168 unit (no idea which unit though). Rather than have this 168 work the return 1P33, 16:07 Shrewsbury to Marylebone service, 67012 was dispatched light engine from Wembley depot to Wrexham to pick up the ECS and work it to Shrewsbury, in order to form 1P33. The 168 unit was originally to run ECS to Tyseley, but this was changed so that it ran empty to Banbury.

Not quite sure where that leaves things for tomorrow, but hopefully back to normal...

Cheers, Geoff

Back to normal I think Geoff as I brought in the 20.30 arrival at Wrexham and put it away and the 22.30 is the 18.33 off Marylebone and that got to Wrexham safely as well asfaik.

Thanks for that TDK.

I see from various loco lists posted for today elsewhere that 67015 moved to Swansea from Crewe, by the looks of it running together with 67017 on 5Z24 according to an early list. A later list has both these locos at "SWINDNTFR", wherever that may be, but what happened in between? Has 67015 had its wheelflats sorted out or have these still to be rectified?

W&S DVT 82303 was at the head of 5Z22 with 67013 on the rear, working from Wembley depot (depart about 09:42) to Wolverton today, via reversal at Coventry. This was seen through Princes Risborough at 10:30. Train consisted of three presumably Cargo-D blue/grey Mk. 3s, but I don't know what the purpose of the move was. Were the coaches being returned off-hire as two refurbished sets are now in use (and the third set may be about to be collected from Stoke), or were more coaches being picked up? I understand that the sets may be strengthened to four coaches in the near future.

I was not able to get to see the return working, so don't know what came back from Wolverton - or what time in any case. If anyone can enlighten me I'd be very grateful...

67014 worked 1P03, 07:23 from Wrexham, together with an old set (this loco seems to have gained a maroon panel under the driver's window on the south end of the loco!) and 67012 was in charge of a refurbished set on 1P13, 11:23 from Wrexham.

Thanks,

Cheers, Geoff

Coaches going off-lease was what I heard.

Set WS003 going to Wolverton to pick up 10222 which has been there for re-commisioning. Should have been out in May!!

10222 should be in use with WS002 during next week replacing 10235 which has a bent gangway that needs repairs.

10235 + 10215 (both DB Regio UK) and 2 of the Cargo D TSO's will be moving to Willesden TMD during next week to add to the Cargo-D/DB Regio UK Hire Fleet.

Thanks for the replies - I have since heard from elsewhere that indeed the move was to pick up another buffet/restaurant car, so the train returned from Wolverton with four coaches, departing at 13:38. Interesting to hear the details of how this coach is to be employed!

Wednesday 9th December 2009 - 5Z67 is on the move as I write this - 10:15 Wembley Depot to Stoke Marcroft, with 82303 leading 67015 (no coaching stock). It passed through Haddenham & Thame at 11:32, possibly around 40 minutes late, only other time I have is Tame Bridge at 12:48. Train is en route to pick up more refurbished coaches and is due to return to Wembley tomorrow, though I don't know of any times. Should be bringing back four TSOs and one RFM which will then be remarshalled at Wembley into four coach sets for the new timetable starting on Sunday 13th December.

It seems there will be one four coach set of blue/grey coaches (which may have already worked 1J80 today), two four coach sets of silver coaches and one set with three silver and one blue/grey coach. Apparently more coaches are undergoing a "partial" refurbishment at Wabtec Doncaster. When these will become available I don't know.

Usual disclaimers apply!

Cheers, Geoff

There are now at least TWO Wrexham and Shropshire sets formed with four coaches (3 Standard, 1 First), one refurbished and one in InterCity® Blue/Grey.

As a result, W&S services formed of such sets are now unable to use Platform 4 at Marylebone as they're just too long (the North end cab door overhangs the ramp, though they're still inside the signal).

I'm not normally quite as dismissive of H&S legislation as many people here, but *what*?

Surely one of the duties of being a driver is that you frequently have to *get down from your cab without a ramp present* when you're stuck at a signal... so why on earth isn't it considered safe to do the same when you're at Marylebone?

Exactly. Plus I often see underground drivers dropping other drivers off at Rickmansworth from the cab, so not too much of a problem at myb.

Its no bad thing if WSMR stop using platform 4, it is a poor excuse of a platform anyway. There's no protection from the weather and a long walk to the concourse for the pax and the TPWS grid is extremely sensitive so trains have to crawl in at less than 5 mph.

A train needs to be 20yds from the signal when changing ends for sighting, you will find that is the most likely reason

The tpws is set at 10mph like all other tpws grids

5mph don't you mean?

The consensus amongst Chiltern drivers is that you can pass the grids at 7 or 8 mph in all platforms except platform 4 which is set for 5mph exactly. Perhaps we are being over cautious!

Having said that we are usually more concerned with the ATP which is also ridiculously over-sensitive when approaching the stops.

Don't think so, at Waterloo you can be almost underneath the starter signal if on a 12 coach train, in fact some platforms are not allowed to split trains as you could SPAD the back end if you went back 2ft (platforms 8,15 and 19, and platform 7 if 10 car 444).

Correct for buffer-stops and TPWS+ and TPWS-, if it fires lower than that then get the union onto it.

The four companies I have worked for have all quoted in their PDP that a train stops 20 yds from any signa lat danger and when shunting to ensure there is a 20 yard spacing ,it is a huge SPAD risk done any other way, so the company allowing this to happen is creating a risk that should if possible be averted. Admittedly on the southern some signals have "S" boards on the signal posts however at Marylebone there is an alternative, Platforms 1, 2 3, 5 & 6 so why put a 6 vehicle train into P4? The reason is the one I have quoted.

No,the grids on P4 are set at 10mph, a lot of managers will tell you 5mph or 6 - 8mph so you are not doing over 10. Any driver that activates TPWS up to buffer stops is exceeding 10mph, very rarely the equipment or train is at fault and if this is the case on P4 it needs to be rectified. I have approached P4 at 8mph over the grids with no problems and was not briefed that it is 5mph.

I think I'm right in saying that both RPM and TDK are correct!

IIRC, it was originally set to 5mph when the re-signalling was first commissioned.

However the design speed is, as TDK states, 10mph.

The original TPWS grids installed on the approach to buffers were not relaible, so NR replaced all of these with smaller grids set at 10mph, if you look closely at the TPWS grids on the approach to buffers vice signals/PSR's you see a noticale difference in size. Origianlly there were major problems with grids approaching buffers but this has now thankfully been rectified. Here's a good fact for you all, the year after TPWS was installed the only 2 major incidents of a collision at buffers was at Charing Cross and also Beckenham Junction and these were the only 2 platforms at the time I knew of on SR not equipped with TPWS. May be a coincidence but I think not.

so BACK to Wrexham & Shropshire's new sets, they're absolutely fantastic inside, i get 4 past my house each day now because of the new timetable! It's brilliant hearing the YING of the 67 at Gobowen station when i live only a few hundred yards from it!

Anyone know of any internet website where i can upload pictures to without limit as Fotopic has annoyed me to heck and back :D

Finally got to travel on one of the new (and extended) sets a few days ago. Very nice. What train travel should be like on the Shrewsbury-Wolverhampton line.

Is there the possibility of the fifth train (per day) being reintroduced in the short term, Mon-Fri or Sat?

I mean when they first began services there were five trains a day each way (Mon-Fri?), now it's down to four. So restoration of having five trains (each direction) a day... possibly on Friday and/or Saturday?

that would honestly be fantastic but if they did that they would need 67011 to be put into the WSMR pool and have another 2 sets be done up at either Marcroft or Donny which would be fantastic so they could run bi-hourly services but cannot see it! :(

Yes I am sure you are correct, I do recall a departure from Wrexham at 1725?
this was pulled due to little traffic to London at that time, who knows
perhaps one day if the business keeps on picking up, however the extra
coach seems more a priority now W/S have extra stops.

The initial timetable was something like 06:45, 10:17, 12:17, 16:33 and 20:03 from Marylebone; 05:12, 07:23, 11:23, 15:23 and 17:23 from Wrexham. (I'm sure Andy'll be along in a little while to correct me if I'm wrong!)

The 10:17 from Marylebone and 17:23 from Wrexham were dropped in March, with the 12:17 being cut back to Shrewsbury, where it started back to London at 16:07.

Then in October, the 06:45 from Marylebone was retimed to 07:23, and the 20:03 retimed to 16:33.

And the latest change has seen the 07:23 retimed to 07:33, 12:17 to 12:20 (and extended back to Wrexham), 16:33 to 16:30, and services making "full calls" at both Banbury and Leamington Spa.

Cheers,

Barry
