Worth Valley Railway.
Worth Valley Railway. Sunday 22nd January 2017.
After a day freezing in the High Peak, I went to bed Saturday night feeling a bit rough, I`d picked up a cold of sorts and Lemp-sipped myself up, I`m not great at being ill. I had a decision to make, do I stay in bed all day Sunday, dose myself up, and get ready for work on Monday, or do I drive off somewhere and face another day out in the cold, (with my cold). I made the obvious decision to go and do a bit of trackside on the Worth Valley Railway. A visit to the Worth Valley served two purposes, one to allow me to try my newly aquired Satnav out again, (and it certainly took me on an interesting route), and two, I have a lineside pass for this year on the Worth Valley Railway, and rarely get my moneys-worth out of these things, plus I also had a free membership pass for the day. So a visit to the Worth Valley Railway it was.
After an interesting journey following the Satnav I arrived at Oxenhope at 09.00, and an hour before the first train out, this gave me ample time to visit the museum and also have some breakfast in the station restaurant coach, a bacon sandwich and a hot brew did me fine, followed by a Lemsip. I was treated to the Taff Vale Tank Loco and made my first journey to the bottom of the line at Keighley. I then went lineside to photograph her departing, walking to the top of the incline, she put on a good show.
Walking back down the line I waited for the next arrival which was the German Railbus, I really do like these machines and have very fond memories of travelling on them in the 1960`s, the Buxton Midland to Millers Dale railbus comes to mind. After a few photographs around the station, I boarded the Railbus and travelled on her as far as Haworth, as I`d notice that 0226 Vulcan, alongside a newly re-liveried Railfreight class 08, were outside the depot and wanted to photograph them.
Returning to Haworth, a visit to the chip shop was in order, but not very impressive, I`m not a great fan of cold and burned chips and should have visited the Ingrow chippie instead. I returned to Haworth railway station in time to catch the returning Railbus back down the line to Ingrow West. No visit to any railway for me, is complete without a rummage through the bookshop and the Worth Valley Railway offers a few, the largest and probably best in second-hand railway books being the museum at Ingrow West, they nearly have as many as me, although such is my collection, I tend to be very selective these days. I did however make one purchase, despite my lack of shelving space, I need a bigger house.
From Ingrow West I walked back down the track bed all the way into Keighley and was passed by the Railbus on the way down. Another brew at Keighley and I awaited the return of the Taff Vale Tank Loco and its rake, and returned to the top of the line to Oxenhope direct. A few photographs of the run round and I next returned as far as Oakworth and caught the Railbus back up to Oxenhope and to the car for the drive back over the mountain and back into the Lancashire side of the hills. Another great day out, but it hasn’t helped my cold any, so I`m just having another Lemsip now and off to bed.
