Worth a shot?

Hi all... having recently being unsuccessful with TPE trainee driver role in the final interview i was wanting some advice in regards to sending an Email to Northern Rail to express my interest and state that i have recently passed all of the psychometric testing?

Is this worth a shot? as i know northern do recruit more regularly than TPE?

any advice will be appreciated.

If you have passed all the OPC tests and are on the database as having passed then yes definately! On the application form it will ask you if you have attended an assessment centre and whether you have passed or not. You are likely to jump straight to the driver manager interview as you have already passed the assesments. Dont get yourself down as it is a great achievement to have passed the assesments!

I'm currently on a trainee Conductor course and we had a chat today with a senior manager at Northern and he mentioned the planned intake for next year is around 100. (guards and drivers) Starting after Christmas. So now is probably the time to get in touch. Good luck...

My advice........Make a CV, write a covering letter (explain why you want to work for their company), print these off on good guality paper and send them recorded delivery in a hardback A4 envelope to the recruitment adress:

The Recruitment Team, 5th Floor, Northern House, 9 Rougier Street, York, YO1 6HZ.

State that you have passed your assessments to a good standard across the board and I wouldn't at this stage say with FTPE, but just that you have passed them.

In June this year I did this with 2 companies (after passing the tests at DBS privately)....I had a phone call the very next day asking me to apply for vacancies. One of these companies had already advertised and the close dates had passed, but I was still able to apply. The other company (preferred) had no vacancies open that day, however informed me by phone when some were coming (a call when they were coming out), and you know the rest of the story with that company and where i am at the moment.

What I am trying to say is yes, approaching the TOCs directly is a good idea and it worked for me....however you must of course ensure that you make your CV and Letter stand out.

Good advice above from Lanc688 I think.

I passed the psychometric tests with another TOC but also applied to Northern as the process was taking so long with the first TOC.

I was invited to an interview with Northern and was eventually offered a job (though at this point the original TOC had got their act together and sent me a contract). I'm sure that already having passed the psychometric tests elsewhere helped though.

Without shooting you down; Northern are one of the harder TOC's to please when it comes to the OPC test results. There's a group standard pass which is generally accepted across 99.9% of TOCs & then there's Northern's Pass standard, which is a lot higher than the standard pass to get in elsewhere.

If you've got a high pass on the tests, give it a go. Having just been through their Conductors course of 13 weeks; and was told by their trainers that they will only take individuals that have the higher pass across the board, for both drivers, and conductors etc it shows that because of the high demand for railway based jobs these days TOC's can be picky with recruitment.
