I just thought this hilarious application by a journalist might amuse you.

Incidentally, worrying that the problems are still continuing

Oh FFS. You do realise that most local papers have been cut back so much that they are pretty much written remotely with a couple of freelancers on the ground.

The poor sod who wrote that probably had about 30 seconds to find and insert the picture from the library before having to move on to the next article about Mr Boggis's Scarecrow for a 'local' paper website on the other side of the region.

I don't find it hilarious at all.

If you want a generic picture to illustrate the point that rail services are at a standstill, then it fits the bill perfectly. There's no caption to suggest it's a picture of Looe station. They're just using a picture to fill space, add a bit of visual interest and so that your eyes are guided to the story.

(If you want 'hilarity', I'd suggest the Angry people in local newspapers blog.)

Seems a perfectly good application to me. Readers don't care if it isn't the exact location but they do recognise that red lights mean trains won't move, therefore the photo fits the story enough. The bit that does get me is the need for capitals at the start of a article ... "TRAINS" ... that is more annoying.

There was one linked a while back here about recent delays to commuters.
It was showing slamdoor stock

I've got a screengrab of it somewhere on this computer, but BBC News pulled off a great one last year by talking about Great Western Mainline Modernisation, Electrification and IEP - Good stat you might think (and ok it was the right region) but then showed the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railways' Toddington Station with W55003 in it.

Today's BBC news article about the Two Person Railcard has a nice and current South West Trains 4VEP sitting in the background of Clapham Junct.

And South Today are quite good for showing First Great Western Ada's and HSTs in Barbie livery, and 442s in SWT.

The Clapham Junction one might be current - there's a BR Blue 4VEP in Clapham Yard and there has been for some time. I can't find the article to which you're referring.

I bet that one had them wondering if the Northwich-Knutsford rail corridor had seen the usual Pacers fitted with new front ends...

Well occasionally Voyagers do go through Northwich (when North Wales to London services are diverted) but they don't stop at Northwich and they are Virgin Voyagers not XC Voyagers.

Also while there's a lot of Pacer services on the Mid-Cheshire line around 60% of services are booked for Sprinters (mainly 150s.)

doesn't stop us from being able to have a chuckle at it though, does it? If they're so busy that they don't even have more than 30 seconds to check for a stock photo then they won't see this.

and a new destination, Bradford Forster Square ;)

Well in a planning permission application for a site next to the Mid-Cheshire line Network Rail put the line from Castleford Junction instead of Castlefield Junction so there must be a secret line to West Yorkshire. ;)

I remember cutting out an article in the local paper about the Barmouth bridge reopening, and they'd used a photo of an HST going over a bridge.

:D

Hope they didn't say the line would be financially viable on the basis that they pay less because the sleepers would be shorter!

Link it up to the Blackpool South - Colne line and dual gauge the entire thing?

Maybe they could convert the pacers and let them run longer.... (This thinking will lead to pure madness and dft policy...)

Back on topic, a local rag of mine has been using a certain photo of someone I know for years, despite having a newer more appropriate one (where they're not squinting and the photo doesn't become pixelated on their website), even when they've been asked to use a different one repeatedly.

I think that's more annoying than the wrong station or track, when they blow up a photo to way beyond the original size and it looks terrible!

As about as good as Jules whatever his name is on the BBC's Escape to the Country, where in the North Staffs area on a episode the other day, was talking about a route constructed and opened by the LNWR in whichever decade the line was built. Great, bit of History you might think, then followed up by saying that thankfully the line is still here and in use with us today - He Say's, riding on the back of a Narrow Gauge 7 1/4" pres railway. Yes... that famous mainline express 7 1/4" gauge railway that the LNWR were very famous for between London and the Peaks...
