That would be what i am saying, yes. Try sitting on every seat you come across properly. You will notice how strange and uncomfortable it feels. You will also notice how much less space you take up.

As for being wonderfully arrogant, fair enough. If simple mathematics ain't your thing, I can't blame you for not understanding the concept.

Actually I am fairly good at simple mathematics. My first response when faced with a train seat with not enough legroom is to sit upright and try to fit myself in the space available. Some still do not have enough space, and I will then either sit sideways into the aisle, sit on the floor, or stand.

It does amaze me though that in this age there is still someone who does not seem to understand that people come in all different shapes / sizes / proportions. Of course there are exceptional people, giants and dwarves etc., and you can't design a train that will seat absolutely everyone. But at 5'9'' I think that insufficient legroom is a sign that the seats have been placed too close together!

I'm the same height, and a lot of the time I am fine for leg room, but in commuter trains such as 323s etc I have pretty much nothing even when sat up right! The same goes for the 142s and 144s...I'm fine in other express trains such as the 390, 220, 158 etc

Electrostars aren't a refurb, therefore don't count

They may not count but the 3+2 are very uncomfortable. However a few of the late 377/1's have a replacement interior from the normal 2+2. These 3+2 seats are the most uncomfortable ever - We had one this evening - the ends of the carriage where there remains a few 2+2 seats totally full and the middle section mostly empty - unusual for train to be empty but I guess that's half term.

But down this way the worse refurb is the FCC Class 319 update. Remove all the tables, put in rubbish seats (3+2 of course and squeeze them closer so you knock knees with the person opposite) and the brightest lighting ever. Nowhere to put your cup of coffee or your paper - not a good experience really.

Give me one of the old southern 319's - odd impractical seating but somehow perfect! A NSE great - shame the railways are now run by accountants and politicians who just need to prove the new trains have more (smaller) seats, standing room and great statistics. Just look at the 378's to see that in real life!!!!!

The second batch of /1s always had 3+2 in the middle AFAIK

The newly refurbished 142s, 142040 in particular, are pretty good but still nowhere near the ex-ATN units (e.g. 142065). The ex-Merseyrail ones are quite possibly the worst trains operating on the network today though.

158 > 156 > 155/153 > ATN 142 > 150/2 > 144 > Northern 142 > Bus > 150/1 > Walking > MR 142

Ahh, I thought you meant the old Merseyrail ones. I don't think I've seen any newer Merseyside refurbs yet.
