Class 442 Wessex sets, and the removal of their jumper cable covers ruining the sleek front ends. One of the few classes of British multiple unit actually designed to look nice, and they find a way of spoiling it! Combined with the absolutely appalling livery that Southern has used. Fair enough they didn't want to waste money painting over the top of their freshly applied SWT colours, but what on earth is with the hideous diagonal line down the cabsides...

Agreed re the cable covers. Originally removed almost from new, they were replaced as part of the recent Southern refurb.............only to be removed again in short order. A study in how to completely ruin the sleek(ish) look in one easy move.

FGW removing the centre partition in its MK3's..

Anyone that knows anything about MK3's will tell you there is a reason why it was made of steel and welded in place..

God forbid a crash, But FGW might find they have given themselves a new fleet of "bendy buses"!!

A MK3 without its central partition has as much structural integrity as a soggy toilet roll tube.

Surely not? I mean, I had always assumed that was the reason for it, but they can't remove a part key to its crash worthiness can they??

I'd hardly think that the Rail Regulator and the RAIB and all those other people would permit such an alteration if it had such a siginficant effect, nor indeed that it would have such a significant effect.

I love the aesthetics of roughly/practically modified vehicles. Here are a few that could annoy some of the purists:

73138 having the thermal imaging camera in the headcode box at one end.

43013, 14 and 62 having forward facing camera boxes at the driving ends, sticking out from the sleek HST style.

31233 (and another, I forget which) laden with spotlamps and IR lamps at one end for SGT work.

And here's another NR Mod to annoy some of the purists / Modification - The, at last overhauled before the winter season (remember last year?), GLVs which are receiving new LED Headlamps and a single roller shutter door on each side instead of the originals.

The removal of the gangways from the class 318s has resulted in an odd look. Usually units without gangways look better, but when removed from a unit that was designed with them the result can be very strange. Some of IEs early 'sprinters' have now had their gangways removed as well and these now look very odd too. (27xx class I think)
