What do you think is the worst current interior on the network is, in terms of look, comfort, and anything else that is relevant.
My nomination would have to be a EMT 153 as there is not enough legroom, the seats are too low, the wall panels let cold air in, half of the seat cushions look as though they have fallen out of the seat backs, they have mismatched handles on the top of the seats, some of the windows leak, most of them don't have seat back tables and a lot of the seat covers are stained.

Another vote for the EMT 153s here. Wretched, horrible units, as I'm sure I've said somewhere before. ;)

Unfortunately, some of the 156s at EMT seem to be much worse with regards the seat back and cushion being detached.

Wasn't at all impressed with a Northern 158 either. A rather tired, dirty, original, Regional Railways interior, complete with the awfully low and generally uncomfortable seats, albeit retrimmed into that awful purple/black fabric that Northern use.

Another vote for the ex Merseytravel 142's :D

It became clear the other day that Northern 155's aren't the roomiest units ever, either

I find the originals with Ashbourne seating more comfortable than the refurbished units with Chapman seating. Not as claustrophobic either.

Merseytravel 142s are awful though. Why didn't they just leave the original bench seats in? Would have been cheaper for a start!

The 142's with the 'car seat' interiors.

What makes me laugh about those is how they've tried to make the saloon lighting more modern looking by putting those office style mirrored grid covers on them, but one big difference with the proper ones and the ones fitted to those 142's dont have the mirrored finish so... just makes it darker! Not to mention all the headrests are at random angles and the moquette really baggy. The Northern refreshed bus seat 142's are much nicer than those ones!

My other pet hate one is the Southern Class 455 interior.

Unfortunately am unaware of the state of the 156s as I tend to use services that are booked 2x153 (and often turn out to be 1x153<( and semi regularly a 158:D )

Forgot about those 150's Christ they are awful! 3 airline seats in a row woohoo good idea BR.

However the 2+2 chapman seated refurbished ones with ATW and FGW are pretty much an ideal rural DMU. It is amazing what a different seating layout can do.

FCC's "non-Southern" (shall we say "economy own brand") 319s take some beating in the "Worst EMU Interior in the South-East" category.

I do agree the 455s and 456s could be better, although SWT's 455s are acceptable for short journeys.

I'd say the LM 150s have the worst interior. It's pretty bad to start with, the orange doors and silver poles giving a particularly old feel. The real problem is the poor internal state though with many of the seats literally falling apart. At least FGW have given there 150/1s a lick of paint and some new seat cushions, it makes a huge difference.

Certainly does, glad to have gotten rid of that 'lovely' Brown / Buff & Orange combination that used to come with those two 150/0s.

Although im not going to let FGW Get off scotch free on this one - I am going to include their 150/1s on this. The units done in Bristol are good - painted walls, refitted seat cushions and new covering, but they left the floor and some of the interior fixtures in Central Trains Green - which dosent half clash with the Rubine Red (Pink). As for those worked on by Pullman Rail in Cardiff, unfortunatly the lesser said about those the better really - odd considering the good job they did with the 150/2 refurb. Unfortunatly, the only real jobs carried out internally by FGW on those ex Sliverlink Jobbies has been some painting of the interior fixtures into Rubine Red, new seat covers and new interior LED Lighting, which on the refreshed units dosent actually look that bad at all - quite smart in fact, but it makes the untouched interior in these 150s look dingy and shadowy. Heck, they even retain the NSE style wall carpet installed by Central / Sliverlink, and the 'Penalty Fares Apply if yo fail to touch your Oyster Card' stickers from LOROL days. Unfortunatly someone dropped the ball there, almost a Northern style job.

I think what units he's on about are some of the non thoroughly refurbished 319s that FCC operate, with FCC seat cushions but a largely untouched interior from NSE / THAMESLINK days. Then again the Southern units with there rather naff Chapman seats arnt in the nicest of conditions either.

Urgh! Yikes! :o

This is the 'Confused' FGW / LM interior as seen in the Ex LM (Bristol Jobs). Obviously the ceiling panels didn't get a touch with the paintbrush, the last one i had still had the outline of the ex Centro route maps visible.

And this is the sort of interior in the ex Sliverlink Jobs.

Could have done alot better, considering the interior in our prototype twins!

I have no problem with the Central/LM interior of the 150s, except for the fact that the seats need a lot of looking after, for they are often falling off their bases. :|

I have to agree about the ex-Silverlink 150/1s, they are hideous. They've already started to smell bad again as well. On the ex-LM 150s they are pretty much there, if they painted the poles pink instead of silver that would make them look a lot better.

I'm glad someone said this before me, my FGW 150/1 hate it too well known! <D

shocking! they have just been refurbished and AFAIK have improved seating certainly not the ex 158 seating

blimey those ex southern 319s (not the /2s) look appalling inside! dark and dingy it is like stepping back into the IRA years!

I believe FGW have spent little on some of their 150s only the basingstoke to reading units have had a proper job probably because they are commuters using the service used to the turbos so they had to spend more money on them!!

All the ex-London Midland units had a decent job done. The only difference between 150001/2 and the rest of the London Midland units is that the other units did not get new flooring. The ex-Wessex Trains units were given a good refurbishment back in 2008 which still feels nice today. It's the ex-Silverlink units that are really bad.

IMHO for a good company image it shouldn't really be possible to easily tell the difference between trains of the same class (unless of course they are different subclasses which intentionally have clearly-visible differences eg different seating). For example, I know South West Trains have received 158s from various people over the years, but I could not tell you which one is which. They all have the same carpets, the same seat covers and the same highlights internally. If they all have been properly refurbished since the TOC last changed their style they should IMHO all look the same ;)

Of course, there are always some visible differences. I wouldn't be surprised if someone listed some small details by which you can tell apart the SWT 158s (please do if you can; I would be interested ;)). But my point is, for the average passenger, you shouldn't really have the same class trains running the same services with different coloured carpets, poles, different-styled ceiling, etc.

Of course, there are obviously far more important things a TOC could be doing. But it does make them look more professional.

If we ignore the fact they are gutless and have the wrong door configuration given some of the work they do then Scotrails 170 interior has to be up there with the worst as far as a long distance train goes. I am told its esthetically pleasing however inverness from Edin or Glasgow on one isnt the0most fun!
XCs refresh of there 170s is much much better! The 156s with Scotrail badly need high back seats on the WHL however good trains none the less.
And any moddle of diziro would benifit from more padding on the seats!

Oddly, I disagree with you on that - I find them to be very comfortable, for either short or long journeys.

What I don't like are the older Scotrail refurb 158s. I find the seats to be pretty uncomfortable and they feel very dark and dreary inside. When I travelled between Edinburgh and Stirling, if one of them turned up I'd sometimes sit on one of the luggage racks (if they weren't needed for luggage) because I found it more comfortable than the seats.

Voyagers.

The interiors are claustrophobic, the overhead racks tiny, the seats are uncomfortable, the interior doors are heavy and keep sliding open, for the door motors to then attempt to re-close the doors noisily! Very poorly designed train. Like $h!t off a stick for poke tho...

The 222's seating is far better, and something about the interior that makes them feel far less cramped. They clearly did something right learning the mistakes of the 220's! Pity they didnt retrofit the voyagers with the improvements

The Voyagers have not nearly been due for a refurbishment yet though. The Voyager’s first big refurbishment is coming up in the next few years – It will probably be something that is specified in the next Crosscountry franchise that commences in 2016.

I have to disagree quite strongly with this view. I have travelled on a 170 from Inverness to Edinburgh and found it to be comfortable and pleasingly bright and airy. That was on a former Hull Trains unit, but I have travelled on other examples of Scotrail’s 170s on shorter runs such as Glasgow to Edinburgh and found them just as pleasant. In fact, I have never come across a Turbostar that I didn’t like.

Probably the Class 172s, in particular the London Midland ones. I just can't get comfortable in those seats, and they're too close to the windows - I end up with my arm squashed up against the wall! The 379s certainly leave a lot to be desired too, with similar seats to the 172s. I just can't get comfortable in them, not to mention the wonderfully-designed, squeaking seat-back tables. The lighting is also far too bright, especially first thing in the morning. For someone who's used to a dimly-lit, sprung seated 317/5, they really aren't nice at all!

I also have to agree with Blindtraveler about 170s, the Greater Anglia examples are absolutely filthy and rattle like hell, and the CrossCountry examples have quite literally no legroom, and also rattle a lot.
