Worst/best preservation liveries?

The first time it wore that livery (1990s) it was also renumbered 40445... another layer of "what if" if they'd fitted Electric Train Supply!
Though D255 (40055) was experimentally equipped when new but the equipment was removed fairly soon, thus being the only 40 ever fitted with ETH, so while not the right 40 it did actually happen to one of the class.

I didn't know that at the time, but possibly it explains its allocation to the LMR, alone in a long series of ER/NER ones.
We didn't take a great deal of interest in diesels but it seemed very odd there was just that extra one, after the original consecutive series, D210-D236
