HSTs may be able to use Sprinter Differentials. I have seen situations where this happens.

Can you give an example? The sectional appendix (that now being the document that shows which classes of train are applicable to which differential for each region) for the LNE states that SP differentials apply only to classes 150, 153, 155, 158, 165, 166, 168, 170, 171 and 172.

How about between Peterborough and Doncaster via the GE/GN? I am sure there were parts of the line where loco limits were around 20 to 30mph.

North of Edinburgh to Inverness I think it does these speeds too.

The Scottish Sectional appendix (Module SC1), Section 2, Clause 2.1 Permissible Speed Indicators, has separate designators for HST, MU, DMU, EMU,SP and CS.

The HST grouping is shown as including class 91, 180,220/221/222,253/254 and all the Sprinters.
The SP grouping is just the Sprinters.

In the individual route pages some lines show an enhanced speed permitted for group HST (e.g. Edinburgh-Aberdeen) and others for Group SP (e.g. Perth-Inverness.

Which suggests that if you want to run the non-Sprinter stuff faster there is an additional requirement.

There is a reminder that 185's are not permitted to run at DMU or MU speeds.
