Worried I've bought advance single tickets

We're travelling from cwmbran to blackpool in august so I've bought tickets through trainsplit and I'm worried about them being advance singles just in case one of the trains is cancelled or delayed and I will have to pay again. If I do have a problem on the day of travel with either transport for wales or northern trains who do I contact as there's mixed reviews about what happens with advance tickets when there's a delay or cancellation with two different train operators.

You do not have to pay again if a delay to a train caused you to miss a connection. If anyone debates it show them a copy of your itinerary.

Not only that but you can claim Delay Repay on the full set of tickets based on the arrival time at the final destination of your itinerary.

If you are concerned you can always print out your booking confirmation email.

If you show this to a member of staff and ask for help you will probably be fine. In the event of any serious issues the best thing to do is just board the next available train. If you're asked to pay again on the train, just pay up if possible, then submit a complaint to the train company and contact Trainsplit customer service who will be very happy to chase up your complaint and a refund for you. It's very unlikely that it will come to you being charged again.

Minor clarification, with Advances this is mostly going to be the next available train of the same TOC as booked. Note that for these purposes Northern, TPE, LNER and Southeastern are one TOC. No doubt as more are nationalised they will be added to the list.

Some staff forget this inter availability between the DfT TOCs in disruption, so see the above advice to pay if they insist and seek to reclaim it - this is much easier than fending off a penalty fare or prosecution.

I've been on live chat to northern trains and transport for wales to see what will happen if either train is delayed and both have said if the train is late and I miss the connecting train I won't be able to board the next train unless I buy another ticket.
If the train going from cwmbran is late arriving at manchester piccadilly should I buy a single or return from manchester piccadilly to blackpool so when I return from blackpool I can leave earlier so I can make sure I'm in manchester piccadilly ready for the train to cwmbran.

This is very disappointing, the staff behind these live chat/Twitter pages desperately need better training.

This is such an uncontroversial accepted fact to still be getting wrong.

That is absolute rubbish from Northern trains.

You are perfectly entitled to take the next train in the event of a cancellation. You should take a train of the same TOC indicated on the ticket.

Complete rubbish indeed, the original poster should believe the posters here and the formal conditions of travel for advance tickets from which I posted an extract earlier and to which I posted a link.

If that is the case this blatant untruth really needs stamping out.

I'd press them for details of where this information is in the conditions of carriage.

Quite. Not sure why they contacted Northern & TfW when the relevant conditions had already been linked on here.

This is misinformation on the part of Northern and TfW; unfortunately, misinformation by train companies and their representatives is not as uncommon as it should be.

However, there are plenty of experts on this forum who can provide correct information (if anyone sees any misinformation, this should be reported, through the 'Report' link at the bottom of the post).

You don't need to buy any additional tickets; you can board the next train of the same operator that your ticket covers.

If in doubt, post on this forum the details of what train you are on, and there is a chance that a helpful forum member could advise you in realtime.

Sadly, train companies such as Northern & TfW have no intention of implementing sufficient safeguards to ensure that all their staff/representatives/agents/contractors provide accurate information, and there is no organisation with the desire/knowledge/power to make them do this. However, that's a debate for a different thread.

I do have a contact at TfW so if @boxfullofjunk has a reference number (or, failing that, timestamps/screenshots of the interaction), please let me know and I will see if I can get someone to look into it.

The social media adviser roles have considerable responsibility and are rather well paid and one would assume something as simple as this would be an easy one for them. That said, if you contact social media accounts after 10pm, I'm not sure if the responses are contracted out to National Rail Enquiries - so anyone's guess what country the reply comes from at night.
