This isn't even an internet parody!

Crowdstrike is a bit of a rubbish name anyway. I can't decide whether to read it wrongly as "Cloudstrike" or to think it sounds a bit like industrial action.

Exactly, its no good having a cash only society if the cash dispensers go down....

The ones at Leeds station were working this morning (unlike ticket barriers which were all open - can't remember the last time I've seen that !)

If this had happened yesterday on one of my trips, I could easily (a) not get a ticket from the machine or ticket office (b) not use my card to get cash out of the machine (c) get on the train ticketless but willing to buy one off the guard (d) the guard can't sell me one as my card isn't recognised/working and (e) I've no cash...and I'm 50 miles from home wanting to get home. What happens next??

This could easily have happened, the only cash I had on me was a tenner. That wouldn't have got me home?

Crowdstrike Statement here...

CrowdStrike is actively working with customers impacted by a defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts. Mac and Linux hosts are not impacted. This is not a security incident or cyberattack.
The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed. We refer customers to the support portal for the latest updates and will continue to provide complete and continuous updates on our website.
We further recommend organizations ensure they’re communicating with CrowdStrike representatives through official channels.
Our team is fully mobilized to ensure the security and stability of CrowdStrike customers.

I think you're overthinking it. It's standard procedure on the railway to allow travel in case of technical failure. If the guard's ticket machine is broken they won't be doing anything other than waving you on.

A very down-beat non-apology and about as useful as...their product.
A more proper response would be tons of grovelling apology, written detail how to fix it, and the address of their lawyers to send the suit.

I think I’d rather take the chance on an occasional wonky update than continue to run software that has vulnerabilities that will never be fixed.
Doesn't that depend on what you use it for? The "main" one I use is updated frequently as I use it for banking, booking tickets etc. However my "other" PC (the one running windows 7 as I mentioned earlier) does nothing on it other than forum chat, a few games, photo editing etc, and has not been updated for years and also the anti-virus has been removed as it was slowing things up. Am I at risk?

Issue is millions of locked down corporate machines that won't allow anyone but IT staff to do this and as they are unable to boot they can't be fixed remotely.
Probably fixable remotely if you have network boot enabled as boot error fallback plus the infrastructure ready for your 10,000 machines to do it near-simultaeneously.

Trouble is, though it's more than a decade on from me being anywhere near this stuff, I guess people with it all set up ready use it for initial provisioning of the entire O/S ... which would likely turn into self-inflicted denial of service.

Indeed. Recording full card numbers like that is likely to be unlawful nowadays too.
Not just nowadays - probably over 15 years that it has been frowned upon (certainly I was dealing with PCI compliance back in 2009/2010 and trying to rid the company I worked for at the time of storing card details as we were by then required to do)

It is on the Internet, so 100% at risk!

Which is why it's sensible to keep a cask "float" of around £100 at home so you're covered in the event of incidents such as today's.

As @Crossover says, if it’s on the internet it’s at risk. You mention forum chat, it’s not unknown for malicious content to be inserted onto sites through advertising banners or similar. With no antivirus there’s likely nothing to stop such content being downloaded.

Other than the fact that for all but “just-in-time” adherents, there’s a reserve sitting in most people’s back pockets.
There's no way on earth I'd put any cash in my back pocket!

You board the train and pay at the earliest opportunity. Or, more likely, you don't because that opportunity probably isn't going to be today and who's going to bother the next time they get to the station, but that's the position you're in according to the rules.

One of the newly reported remedies by Microsoft is now to reboot machines 15 to 20 times
