World to end in 2012?

just wanted to know what people here think about this nonsense that the world will end on 21st decmber 2012?

some people have said that it will happen with the atom colldier or when yellowstone national park finally blows its top

personally i dont beleive the world will end in 2012 although i am waiting for yellowstone to erupt since it seems to be on a cyle of 640,000 years and that has scared me since lake toba when it erupted casued the last ice age

It's a load of tripe. On a serious note the world came close to ending a number of times during the cold war:

October 15 – October 28, 1962 : Cuban Missile Crisis: The conflict pitted the United States against an alliance between the USSR and Cuba. The USSR was attempting to place several launch sites in Cuba in response to the United States installation of missiles in Turkey. The United States response included dispersal of Strategic Air Command (SAC) bombers to civilian airfields around the United States and war games in which the United States Marine Corps landed against a dictator named "ORTSAC" (Castro spelt backwards). For a brief while, the U.S. military went to DEFCON 3, while SAC went to DEFCON 2. The crisis peaked on October 27, when a U-2 (piloted by Rudolf Anderson) was shot down over Cuba and another U-2 over the USSR was almost intercepted when it strayed over Siberia, after Curtis LeMay (U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff) had neglected to enforce Presidential orders to suspend all overflights.

November, 1979 : A false alarm at the NORAD complex at Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado indicating a massive ICBM attack against the United States was underway turned out to be the result of a technician plugging in a training tape to the main computer. The attack turned out to be false when it was discovered that there were no ICBM launches from the Soviet Union. A US senator who was in the complex at the time the false alarm occurred described the scene on the control center as mass commotion.

November 1983 : Exercise Able Archer: The USSR mistook a test of NATO's nuclear-release procedures as a fake cover for a NATO attack and subsequently raised its nuclear alert level. It was not until afterwards that the US realized how close it had come to nuclear war. At the time of the exercise the Soviet Politburo was without a healthy functioning head due to the failing health of then leader Yuri Andropov.

January 25, 1995 : Norwegian rocket incident: A Norwegian missile launch for scientific research was detected from Andøya Rocket Range and thought to be an attack on Russia, launched from a submarine five minutes away from Moscow. Norway had notified the world that it would be making the launch, but the Russian Defense Ministry had neglected to notify those monitoring Russia's nuclear defense systems.

It's not bigger than anything just more dramatic.

Im gonna be frank and just say if we all die then just deal with it and not spend a minute of this apparently shorter life by worrying over things like this.
If were gonna die then so be it because let's face you can't esacpe it no matter how far you go and how fast you run and reading more posts about it won't make it happen any more or less.

Hmm Yellowstone is a concern, but I'm not too worried about it, What I am worried about is North Korean nuclear testing, although for the word to end in 2012 seems a little far fetched.

Basically they have put a date on an event that could very well start the declining process of life on earth, but probably not end the world all together.

Amen to being in the Southern Hemisphere though, not a lot happening down here that could end us all.

Although Yellowstone could blow its top at any given time, you cant schedule in an eruption in a diary, it could happen a week later than the date they give, or it could happen a year earlier or not for another 50 years, you just cant tell until it happens.

To be honest, I'm not too bothered about these supposed dates for the end of the World in any way, although I have a strong belief that the World will end at some point as - Sorrowful though the thought is for this nature loving Pagan - Planets are created and destroyed just like the lives of humans, and the odds of our bit o' rock lasting ad infinitum are very very small indeed, what with all those other bits flying all over space and all. :?

Assuming that it happens as soon as certain people/organisations say it will, then we'll all be in more or less the same boat anyway - And trying to "get away" from the end of the World would be a rather unwise thing for anyone to attempt. After all...If ye were the only being to escape the destruction, could ye even begin to imagine the sorrow and solitude from being so alone...Especially after all of thy friends, family and loved ones had perished? hock:ad:
If ye want my opinion: If the World should end in a meteor strike or nuclear war, the best place for anyone to be would be directly beneath the first rock or bomb to fall. Although thy death would be 100% certain, at least it would be a swift and hopefully painless one!

Personally...The only thing I'm dreading about the apocalypse is the unholy amount of work that it's going to kick up for me in such a short space of time. Guiding 750 billion departed Spirits to their own respective afterlifes isn't going to be an easy task, and there's going to be some Hellish platform queues at Purgatory New Street when it does eventually come about! hock:

How many of you still have or have thought about building a nuclear fallout shelter in your back yard, like they might have existed in the Cold war?

For me personally, I don't have any worry, I mean no one is going to nuke my happy town all the way down here, although In the slightest hint of that happening I'll be grabbing a spade and driving out into the desert and digging my self a bunker.

But in all honesty you guys actually have a better chance of survival in a nuclear war, which is more likely than a comet at this rate. You guys have hundreds of nukes at your disposal, so what ever they do to you, you will be able to do far worse to them.

So you guys have a chance, but, when you think about nuclear deterrence there might not even be a war that you's can worry about anyway.

Spare a thought for the poor souls in Seoul or Japan, now they have something to worry about.

Now I heared something earlier about the Mayans, well as an archaeology student I would dismiss any thought that the Mayan calendar ending would end the world, I mean, think about other calendars that have existed? Why the Mayans?

If there was an extinction event its likely there would be enough variation/mutation in the human gene pool that enough people will survive to re populate the world. Although as a species I think we should be looking long term to populate new planets to survive as it is a fragile world we live in.

It's interesting there had always been a pre-occupation with the end of the world and has been predicated many times before, usually by religious cults with little accuracy. At the time of the writing of the Bible, some of the theologians were convinced the world with end within their lifetimes.

Didn`t Nostradamus predict it happening in 1999? I was at Slimelight (a Goth club in London) that day and everyone was saying it would happen, then when it didn`t they were all going "Nostradamus, What a fraud" the next morning. Like they were hoping it was going to happen...

Personally, I think we`ve all got to worry more about nukes in briefcases rather than ICBMs, as the terrorists are more likely to use this method, and it would destroy a smaller area, although it would produce more fallout due to the lower altitude detonantion.

Ythat was a load of crap if it did create a black hole it whould disapear as soon as its created since there is not enough mass on earth for the black hole to survive.

The 2012 thing will be just as much of an apocolypse as the 1999 and 2006 ones.

The LHC wont do anything, physics says it cant and even if the could said black holes would evaporate due to Hawking Radiation.

Yellowstone is a more realistic threat but not apocalyptic. Us in the UK should be more worried about the Lacher See in Germany TBH

That film still haunts me to this day, we were made to watch it at school! It upset many of us due to the fact it was set so locally.

An Ice age doesn't happen overnight, it takes hundreds of years to form, even the process of evolution needs to transform animals to adapt, you don't think the woolly mammoth simply pulled out a fur coat from the closet do ya?

If there is another Ice age coming, we won't be around to experience it*, nor would our children or their children.
