The people behind the outstanding 'Berlin Subway' MSTS expansion, TML-Studios, are now creating their own brand new simulation programme. It'll be called 'World of Subways' and will be specifically designed for underground railways. The official website can be found at http://www.world-of-subways.com/index.php?id=160&L=1, where you can find out a little more about the simulator, including screenshots of the 'PATH' route, and vote for other routes to be included.

Looks and sounds promising - especially if the Berlin Subway MSTS expansion is anything to go by, which added extra features such as wear-and-tear to trains that still used the base MSTS software to run.

Lets hope there will be some London Underground routes!
Use your two votes and vote for some then :D I voted for H&C and Met as sub-surface lines would obviously be a better in-sim experience than a train in small tunnels, and there's already the Victoria released and District being released in stages for MSTS - plus a number of high-quality BVE tube lines. That way you have both the scenery when outside, but also the exterior views would work better in the two-way tunnels than the tight single-bores.

So let me get this straight...we don't need MSTS for World of Subways and it is a different program entirely or we do need MSTS like the Berlin U-Bahn one?

looks too good to be free, id pay for that.

Although I'm hoping its one where it can suit normal computers as well. Looking at the graphics it looks like it could be wanting 10GB RAM, 200GB graphics card, 1,000,000GB hard drive, DirectX 20 (so we have to wait for that) etc etc

Ok the above was maybe a *little* bit over the top, im sure you know what i mean though :P

Cheers,

James.

Feature List (Part 1):-

Today we would like to tell you more about features you will find in the "New York PATH Route":

  • Opening doors to be seen from either inside or outside, controlled by the player
  • Doors can be openend seperately. Options are the doors on the right and left side of the train. Of course you can also open both sides at the same time.
  • Break Spark - Spaces in between the live rails can produce break sparks on the current collectors which can be seen as lightning flashes and which can also be heard. This is best to be seen in a tunnel as the tunnel walls will be lit for a split second when this happens.
  • Train vibration – as soon as the train starts moving, vibrations will take effect on the train.
  • Train swings – The train will start swinging the higher the speed. You will especially get this kind of feel in the cab. Hard braking will also produce this effect and the train will still be in a swinging motion when it has come to a full stop.
  • Configurable key commands – The player can freely configure keys to his liking. He can for instance configure the key for the brake lever wherever he wants.
  • 3D – Cockpit with rotatable camera – allowing the player to look around. By using a key stroke the view angle will be centered again.
  • Free movement inside the train – While the train is stationary at a station you will have the option to switch to an ego perspective inside the passenger car. You can move by using keyboard commands, view angles can be controlled with the mouse.
  • Free movement on the station – you can get off the train at any station and move around (ego perspective). There will also be some missions starting on the platform of a station. The player will have to walk into to the train, into the cab which is seperated from the passenger area by a door.
  • Changing of cabs at a terminus – sometimes you will have to change the cabs during a mission. You will have to do this at Hoboken at the weekends when shift operation is active. The train driver has to leave the cab, the train and then walk along the platform to the other end. He then gets into the train and cab again to prepare for departure.
  • Realistic lighting on the trains – Pixel lighting allows a correct display of the amount of light. You probably know what it looks like when thinking of a flashlight shining agains a wall. Pixel lighting allows the display of such lighting effects as can already be seen in some ego shooter games. This effect will amaze you when driving at night or through a tunnel.

I assume you guys know that this has been developed using the Quake 4 engine I believe. As in the First Person Shooter Quake 4 game.

This will give you some idea of the graphical power:

You can drive vehicles in Quake 4 so I assume the developers are merely working from that functionality. Its certainly a very power engine so World of Subways will look stunning.

I would also fully expect the ability to stop driving and walk around, as well as (dare i say) multiplayer funcitonality seeing as Quake 4 fully supports online play.

That is really ther aspect that most interests me about this game. Implementation of multiplayer in train simulation. I would be amazed if it wasnt included, as they have started from a game engine that is built to run over networks and servers.
