Disappointing first half, but cracking second (especially after the hydration break). Where would we be without Harry Kane (possibly disqualifed in the group stage, in my opinion).

An interesting and surprising stat just popped up in my Facebook feed:

Italy won the world cup in 2006
Spain won it in 2010
Germany won it in 2014

Since their wins, none of them have won a world cup knockout tie.
Someone show this to Cape Verde ;)

France of course though are the exception so far, though if Argentina do win against Cape Verde they will join France in averting this curse.

That winning goal by Kane was superb. Especially after however many minutes of the tension being ramped up.

Phew!

Agreed-absolutely superb! Especially after the tension, as you say.

The DR Congo were not 100% on it for one moment and Kane took three of them out of the game and smashed it in. Impressive.

Poor show though, Spence awful, Maduke awful, Rashford wasteful. Where does O'Reilly play? Saka cant be fit or surely he starts. Do we have a midfield? I don't like Gordon but he did the job! I thought the DR Congo team and especially the keeper did a fantastic job

That was awful.

DR Congo’s goalie and Noah Sadiki were brilliant. Madueke was so bad he made Arthur Masuaku look good

England got out of jail big time. Play like that against Mexico and they’re out

It’s certainly going to be a big test - Mexico at the Azteca have a superb record and then factor in the altitude also and England have a significant challenge on their hands.

Yeah. I’m not sure that we get past Mexico. That’s a huge step up from where we are now.

That was a struggle from England & almost looked as bad a game as Iceland.

A definite problem at right back as Spence was awful making the DR Congo player look brilliant, Declan Rice was much better at right back after Spence was taken off. The rest of the defence didn’t inspire confidence & left me thinking the likes of Mbappe would score a lot of goals.

The next match against Mexico at the Azteca looks difficult, Mexico have an excellent home record, the altitude is also in their favour.

I’m trying to work out what to do with the Mexico game on Monday morning. I’m going to have to work as I’m absolutely swamped at the moment.

I’m thinking that we have a news and radio embargo over breakfast while I get Mrs C to set the match going on BBC Sounds just before I head off in the car, without looking at her extremely expressive Northern Irish face?

What’s everyone else doing?

This could of course be the route to a fairly bleak Monday morning…

Belgium - bobbins for 88 and a half minutes. Dead and gone. Useless. Lost. Car started. 2 goals in 30 odd seconds and back in the game. Unbelievable Jeff!

And Belgium then completed the comeback by winning 3-2 (after extra time) with a late 120+5th minute Youri Tielemans' penalty.

And given what’s at best a highly dubious penner
It was a modern football penalty. Always going to be given once the VAR got involved.

a remarkable game. The car wasn't just started, it was pulled up round the front with the bags being packed. Belgium were terrible and I cant see them going much further.
