Working Sundays

May have already been asked but where do we stand with working Sundays? A friend of mine works for FGW where he is not obligated to work ANY Sundays if he doesn't want to!

However another friend works for Cross Country and it states that 24 Rostered Sundays are to be worked per year?

Just trying to see if each company operates differently or whether unions ect come into the picture as Sundays are not a compulsory day of work?

By the way I have absolutely no problems working Sundays, I'm just raising the question 'can you refuse Sundays or do you have to work them if they are stipulated in the contract'?

Just found it, thank you! It really was a can of worms! Like I said, happy to work my fair share of Sundays, just fine it bizarre that FGW can shown themselves 'no available' or get paid OT for working what other companies have as 'any other working day'...

Pretty much. Drivers do it occasionally in terms disputes.

Not really that bizzare, no different to any other fragmented industry.

Not forgetting us Senior conductors that transferred from Central Trains to CrossCountry, we also have no obligation to work a single Sunday either, so in this case it varies within the same company AND franchise.

This is known in the trade as BBQ Sundays, all the drivers at a given depot will put in a letter to the TCS making themselves unavailable for a given Sunday so only a few trains will run unless there is cross depot cover.
