Work has restarted on two lines of the Brussels RER after a three year gap. Especially frustrating on my line, Brussels <-> Charleroi as so much of the earthworks, new bridges and stations was already mostly complete and has been slowly falling in disrepair. Graffiti and weeds growing through new platforms.

At one point it was suggested that the new track bed, already in place between Braine l'Alleud and Waterloo be used as a cycle path!

The section that passes through Flanders before reaching Brussels will take more time to restart as the planning permission and construction permits have expired.

The division in Belgium seems to be a constant hinderence. Oddly enough, Belgium build a little used high speed line frome Liegé to the German border.

But planning and building in Germany are also two seperate things. Look at the feeder line from Germany to Basel (for the Gotthard tunnel). God knows when that is done. Or the extension of the Betuwe route from the Netherlands into Germany, again hinderence on the German side.
The Fehrmanbelt tunnel to Denmark, start of work for 2022 is also again in doubt.

I've been visiting Belgium once or twice a year for the past four years, and noticed that the section between Brussels and Ottignies didn't seem to be making much progress over those four years!

I noticed some activity around Linkebeek and Moensberg this morning. Contractors back there fitting railings, it's been a very long time with no activity at all.

Financial means will be dedicated to the Ottignies line first, and on this line, tracklaying restarted already.
