Work Experience

I'm in Year 13 at the moment just finishing Sixth Form, hopefully studying Transport & Business Management at university from September. I've lined up some work experience this summer with a haulage company but would really like some work experience in the rail industry for a week, preferably in July or September if possible. Admittedly I've left it rather late and chances are slim but would like to give it a try regardless.

I'm thinking of writing to or emailing CrossCountry, East Midlands Trains, Network Rail and Transport for London. I live near to Derby and can commute to Milton Keynes with my father if need be.

Would be much appreciated if someone could give me any numbers, emails, contacts etc which would give me the best possible chance for work experience as in the past I've been seemingly ignored.

Not sure of week-long work experience, due to the S/C nature of much of the work, but I do know XC do sandwich year placements, maybe something to keep an eye out for in the future

Hi fella,

I feel for you that if you asked to do some work experience in "Control " at a train operating company this will give you an insight in to how the railway is run, you will find it hard to get any SC work experience unfortunately.

Hi,

I know someone personally who recently did voluntary work experience on the platforms at his local station. Soon afterwards, he got a permanent job, though not for any of the TOCs you have mentioned. Establishing a contact at a local level and getting a manager to lobby the case to the HR department is more likely to yield a positive result than asking the recruitment department directly.

What are you hoping to gain out of the experience? I went down the road of taking two years out after completing Year 13. The second of which, I worked full time on the railways in a ticket office. Once you have experience and you have proven that you are worthy of a good reference, you shouldn't have much trouble in getting opportunities to attend assessment days for other roles you may apply for, though after that point it's all about your interview technique.

I am presently doing that degree and am loving everything about it - you get to learn about economics, finance and statistics in a transport context as well as the physical attributes of the transportation network and technical aspects of the vehicles. The university life is fantastic too - I don't regret doing it for a second. If anything, it has taught me a lot about time management.

Thanks that's useful I'll certainly look into that. Hoping to get a feel for a company to ensure it's something I want to pursue and perhaps help me get a foot in the door when it comes to a placement year in a few years time. Given the S/C environment I completely understand, working in an office is what I expected (As fun as it looks driving the things!). Looking forward to the degree greatly, sounds very useful, just hoping I get the grades I need!
