Work experience on the railways

I have got work experience later this year and would like to try and get something on the railways. I have already phoned up Network Rail to see if they do anything but I was told I would need to know someone locally who works for them but unfortunately I don't know anyone who does. My main interests are behind the scenes of the railway such as signalling or maintenance.
Do any TOCs or rail companies offer work experience? Any help or past experiences would be appreciated.

In April 2013 I spent a week with customer service at (at the time the newly reopened) Reading station with First Great Western, which also allowed me to see quite a bit behind the scenes.

Best thing to do is befriend your local Station Manager and get some work experience through that avenue. I live in London and got into the industry through 2 weeks work experience with London Underground and now i'm with Docklands Light Railway.

I was told by ATW a while back that they don't offer work experience or apprenticeships?

I'm sure Virgin at Crewe have done it in the past, pop up to the station and have a word with the staff there and they might be able to help. Much more going on there than at Shrewsbury anyway.

They've definitely done apprenticeships at Canton Depot at least.....
