Work Experience on the Railway

Apologies if this is in the wrong section but I wasn't sure where else it might go.

I was just wondering if EMT or XC did work experience placements around the Derby or Nottingham area? I know we've only just started back at school but I ask as we were told today that we would need to start looking for placements pretty soon. Thank you in advance.

Theres no such thing as a daft question. The only thing I can suggest is to ring emt or xc up and ask. Northern Rail im fairly sure also run out of Nottingham.

Will do! Bad experiences with northern staff in the pass Will stick with EMT and XC!

Spanish (already good at the language), Geography, Drama (can't see that being of much use ) and Business Studies (don't know how good that could be).

I think Spanish could be useful on the Gatwick express. Think business studies could prove handy or helpful as well.

I don't think GCSE options will help at all with work experience placements.

Since I've done one (last year), then it is possible to get a work experience, but it varies from company to company.

SWT is a flat no.
First Great Western I know someone who has done one.
Southern usually do in the metro area but I've done one in the "country" area.
South Eastern I think does.

So, its all about ringing the recruitment departments and seeing. Now, age WILL come into it, I was 26(!) at the time, as far as I know of, 14 may well be too young. 16 I think can be accommodated, but you'll have to see, 18 or over they might well consider.

why do companies use computers to select employment prospects? Two reasons come to mine. First, they can't find HR people smart enough to read resumes. Second, the company doesn't want to spend the money on HR people who can read resumes. In other words, if you find a company that you might allow to hire you and this company takes applications via website only, that is a huge RED FLAG. The flag says, "this company is run by cheapskate morons who won't hire decent HR people and generally try to skimp on wages and benefits."

You need skills not GCSE, customer care ect do volunteer work on a heritage railway get SKILLS it's all about SKILLS, you will gain SKILLS on a Heritage railway.

Actually, on all railway industry application forms I've had to fill out, there has been a stated minimum GCSE requirement to reach the next stage, invariably including English and Maths. At the age of 14/15, the idea of a work experience placement is to gain and develop skills.

Doesn't the OP already volunteer on a heritage railway?

I agree that in general (barring the obvious Maths/English standards etc) companies like this will like to see 'skills', as you put it, in some areas, but I don't necessarily agree that the best way to do it is on a heritage railway, and I definitely disagree with the assertion that you *will* gain skills that way. As I say every time this comes up, you get out what you put into it, and cleaning a steam engine a couple of times a month (as much as I don't doubt those who do it enjoy what they do) isn't going to get you very far in terms of experience or 'skills'. However, volunteering regularly on one of the larger lines in a more customer facing role could potentially give you strong experience in Cash Handling, Customer Service, Rules and Procedures etc.

I would suspect it's the same in a lot of similar projects too. I'm not too sure I can be particularly helpful on the original point but hope the search goes well

Assuming we're talking Computing over IT, I'd definitely recommend it as an interesting and useful thing to learn - learning about algorithms and such helps train your brain to think in a structured and logical way.
