Work Experience Aged 15 - 19

I'm currently in Year 11 (aged 15), and my school is running a work experience scheme between the end of Year 11 and the start of Year 12. I was wondering whether any TOCs or Network Rail offer work experiance to school students aged 15 - 19.

I am particularly interested to find out about East Midlands Trains, CrossCountry or London Midland if they do work experience, as they are my most local TOCs, or Network Rail in the Midlands.

I understand that some jobs may be unsuitable (e.g. train/infrastructure maintenance, driving), but I would be particularly interested to work on trains and stations.

You would need to approach the the TOC directly.

I know arriva have had work experience kids in the past, cross country are arriva so give them a whirl

I applied for ATW for my year 11 experience week, with no reply, but my friend managed a week in canton depot with them!

I contacted London Midland and CrossCountry re. Work Experience and was not successful - but I wrote to East Midlands Trains and they have written back to me asking after dates and the sort of areas in which I would like to do the work experience.

On that last point, what sort of areas are there in the structure of a train operating company like East Midlands Trains?

Having done work experience for london underground and now work for a toc, I would recommend:
A day in the head office (spend time with planning, revenue management department, market with other options customer services, rosters, performance, finance)
Spend a day with an onboard member of staff
See if you could spend a day with a driver- very unlikely as they would require someone to supervise you.
Spend a few days on the frontline at a station
Spend a day with control (I remember having great fun looking through lu station cctv)

I think it's important to get a mix of spending time at hq, but also being on the frontline. Esp with frontline, you can be more hands on which is more fun and actually help the staff.

I did two weeks work experience at a toc and got a job at the end of it three years ago... all front line work, Good luck!
