...if anyone is crossing Paris soon from Gare du Nord, they have serious problems with the ticket machines which all appear to be broken. The queues at the ticket office are like you used to see on baking day in east Berlin. Had to get a cab to Gare de Lyon. Tried to charge me 40 euros...cheeky sod, managed to barter him down to 25. Still too much in my eyes.

A Brief word of advice. When purchasing your tickets from reputable outlets like Rail Europe or Eurostar you should ask about purchasing a Carnet of 10 metro tickets. Even if you forget at the time of ticket purchase you can get a Carnet of metro tickets at the Eurostar terminals from places like the Bureau de Change or information points inside the international terminals. This saves queuing up and the tickets are valid for zones 1 & 2 in Paris. They last for ages too, so if you dont use them all on one journey through paris dont worry you can use them the next time too.

Now why didn't I think of that in the first place.. doh! Mind you, in future I think I will go via Lille, as the barriers on the RER are hardly user-friendly to someone carrying a large bag on each shoulder...
