I was playing around on the National Rail Enquiries app and I discovered that apparently there's an off-peak day return from Worcester to Melksham which is valid via Pewsey.

It's Worcester - Reading - Westbury - Melksham. The app said it's £23.90, the same price as going the usual way via Cheltenham.

I can make the National Rail Enquiries come up with this route via Pewsey If I put in Worcester to Melksham "via Pewsey", or "avoid Cheltenham".

But, when I go to buy it on GWR's website and app, it said there are no fares available for the route via Pewsey. (I was going to buy it and have my itinerary emailed to me, just in case I encounter problems going via Pewsey).

So, is the £23.90 ticket valid via Pewsey or not? The National Rail Enquiries app seems to suggest it is. If National Rail Enquiries confirms a ticket's validity, is that enough for me to be safe, if I take a screen shot of it, and then go via Pewsey anyway?

If NRE offers you an itinerary in conjunction with the ticket you hold (or intend to buy), it constitutes a valid route. See the following quote from the Routeing Guide:
Please note that the fare routes data and maps in the National Routeing Guide are generated from the same data used in the Journey Planner at www.nationalrail.co.uk Therefore, in the case of uncertainty, a route may be checked inputting the relevant origin, destination, interchange and intended via points at that site.

Considering it would be impossible for any ticket inspector to know the full listing of which routes are valid for every station combination, if you show them a ticket with an itinerary from NRE then they will 99.9% say yes, plus it is valid as if you get an itinerary generated by NRE you are allowed to go that route, so you would be safe - the only issue would be if you want to break your journey say at Reading the ticket barriers probably won't open but if you speak to staff you should be able to go through

Appreciate you'd be allowed to do this if you can get an itinerary under the through ticket but out of interest I can't see how this is allowed according to the rules of the Routeing Guide itself. The Routeing Point Calculator says the only appropriate destination routeing point for Melksham from Worcester is Chippenham, which only has mapped route WO via Bristol.

It looks like easement 700310 is allowing travel through Westbury routeing point using the LH + WE map combination. For now...
