Yes but the foot tunnel takes forever and im out of breath by the time ive used it which is no good if people going to work.

As I say its always a bonus to have an alternative to tunnels and the ferry provides just this.

The Woolwich foot tunnel isn't perhaps the most pleasant crossing in the world. especially as it's a lot quieter than the Greenwich one

Even fifty years ago, and more, it wasn't considered ultra-safe. At least then you still had liftmen at each end until 7 p.m. who would be scanning the horizon for potential passengers when the lift was at the bottom. You couldn't see all the way along, though, because of the gradual dip to the middle, whereas, IIRC, you can see all the way through the Greenwich one.
