Wolverhamton to Leeds

Hi everyone, I am looking to travel from wolves to Leeds on Sunday 31st July ( going to see Nufc v Lufc ) and return same day. Realistically i need to be at Leeds by 1pm and leave around 4pm returning via Birmingham (arr Birmingham 1800-1830 ) as i am going to see Iron Maiden that night I believe i can break the return journey to allow me to leave the station to go to the gig ...but not totally sure? I have found the off peak return for £53 and was wondering if there is any way of splitting to get a cheaper price? Any help would be most appreciated.

The Manual states that break of journey (BOJ) is always permitted on the return portion of any (Super) Off Peak return ticket. So yes, you can.

For the outward portion you can unless prevented by a specific restriction, I realise that you are not wanting to break your outward journey so there is no need to check this.

As for splitting, providing you are happy to avoid the route via Manchester and restrict yourself to going via Derby, then you can split at Derby (DBY) and Sheffield (SHF). The fares are:

• WVH-DBY £16.50 SVR (Rte: Any Permitted)
• DBY-SHF £9.60 CDR (Rte: Any Permitted)
• SHF-LDS £9.30 CDR (Rte: Not Doncaster)

Total £35.40
(Saving £17.60)

But you can increase the savings slightly by buying Wolverhampton-Burton, a Derbyshire Wayfarer and Sheffield to Leeds. Wolverhampton station should not have any difficulty selling the Derbyshire Wayfarer (York certainly don't) but some ticket offices may decline to offer it because for bus drivers to accept it (not that you need to worry about that as you only want to use it on trains!) it needs to be in a special pouch which is only available within the Wayfarer area, hence why it says "purchase within Derbyshire". The lack of pouch can sometimes be used by stations as an excuse not to issue it. If Wolverhampton refuses, you could re-book at Burton but this would be inconvenient. Also check that your trains call at Burton if you wish to get a Wayfarer, if not then it is best to split at Derby. Note that on some Sundays there are engineering work and trains are diverted via Leicester and will therefore not call at Burton.

Well, as you are not supporting L**s , try this:

Wolves to Derby Off Peak Return - £16.50 (valid to break journey @ Birmingham)
Derby to Sheffield Off Peak Day Return - £9.60
Sheffield to Leeds Off Peak Day Return (Not Doncaster)- £9.30

Total - £35.40

There is a cheaper split at Burton on Trent but this would restrict you to trains which stop there and many don't.

A Brighouse - Chesterfield SDR might be more useful for the split (IRRC it is valid via Leeds).

London Midland forbid it. I'm not sure off the top of my head but I believe LK is the restriction code.
I was going to suggest splitting at Derby and Sheffield by Yorkie beat me to it.

Thanks everyone for your replies Looks like the splits at Derby and Sheffield it is then. I hoped that there would be splits but to get £17 OFF the return fare has really surprised me....That`s 1/3 off or equivalent to a railcard discount that i dont qualify for.

A secret condition hidden away in the validity code versus an overriding principle in The Manual? I don't think LM can go against such a principle. However the NRCoC says that were a break of journey is prohibited the TOC will "make this clear in their notices and other publications"; LM do no such thing - and if they attempt to I will of course refer the matter to Passenger Focus and ATOC.

LM are skating on thin ice; if they continue to mistreat customers then the media will be contacted about a variety of matters (not least the St Albans ticket fiasco). There's also the matter of disgraceful comments by an LM guard on another forum which I have not yet decided whether to take forward or not. My patience with LM is not unlimited.

If there is "doubt" about a term, then there is legislation that deals with that...

No problem - that's what we're here for! We can't guarantee a good result every time but we do our best.

Indeed the savings are substantial on this route. This is partly because XC are expensive and they price the ticket for the overall journey, and also partly because you are returning on the same day, and Day returns are cheaper.

I regularly do Leeds to Wolves returns. It can be a nightmare finding cheaper routes/tickets. Under Virgin XC, I regularly used to get an advanced return for just over £20 - happy days! Now I try all sorts....

-Break at Derby
-Break at Derby and Sheffield
-Break at Manchester
-Put via Stockport
-Book from Brum not Wolves and use the West Mids off peak evening fare (£2 return)
