Wolverhampton to Nuneaton permitted routes

I need to travel from Wolverhampton to Nuneaton on the afternoon of Sunday 4 September. It's 75 minutes via Stafford and 96 minutes via Birmingham New Street. Why isn't the former a valid route? Seems to be a reasonable way to go. (Split ticketing at Penkridge, gets the price down if I go that way but commits me to the via-Stafford route.)

There isn't really any logic to it. The fares from Stafford are in fact cheaper (even on Any Permitted fares) so you wouldn't be undercutting anything if there were such validity.

The Penkridge fare doesn't force you to go via Stafford. It is valid both ways.

The cheaper Penkridge-Nuneaton fares I mentioned are routed "via Tamworth", so getting one of those does then commit me to that direction.

It's disappointing that my OP has been moved, because I have had success on three previous occasions in getting reasonable routes reinstated in the Routeing Guide, simply by posting in the National Routeing Guide update thread. The team that are closing down routes seem to monitor that thread and react quickly.

It's disappointing that my OP has been moved, because I have had success on three previous occasions in getting reasonable routes reinstated in the Routeing Guide, simply by posting in the National Routeing Guide update thread. The team that are closing down routes seem to monitor that thread and react quickly.

The relevant people in all the TOCs will take an interest in every thread in this subforum in case something of interest pops up (especially threads with 'permitted routes' in the title, such as this one).

It doesn't commit you to use Stafford in both directions - if you wish you could obtain a change of route excess.

Is it definitely not a valid route, just checked on my ticket machin and it has no mention of "via" or "not via". Highly unlikely you'd have an issue onboard LNWR trains in particular doing so.

Splitting at Penkridge saves a few quid and would be via Stafford only.

Thanks for reminding me. I'd forgotten I could do that. (I am so used to TOC-specific tickets where you can't excess to the non-TOC ticket.)
