Wolverhampton St. Georges

Is this West Midlands Metro station still used.
The timetable online seems to suggest that it is no longer in use.

Anyone know if it is likely to be be reused again ?

I always thought the intention was for half the Trams to go round the new bit to the railway station and the other half to continue to terminate at St George's. Personally I was never convinced this was particularly sensible, particularly as the headways seem to have been reduced from the original Tram every 6 minutes to now running every 8 minutes.

I imagine that when Brierley Hill - Wolverhampton trams start running then either they or the Birmingham trams will use St George's and the other Wolverhampton Station seeing as it's only a single track turnaround at both termini.

I would agree, something like that would seem sensible. The silence from TFWM and/or Midlands Metro Alliance has been total. When the extension to Wolverhampton Station opened in Sep 2023, they said that Wolverhampton St George’s would closed temporarily and reopen “later in the autumn“. Since then questions posted on MMA’s social media have failed to elicit any response (as far as I’ve seen at least).

I believe the extended delay to re-opening St George's is down to the building work taking place on the 'City Learning Quarter' (a college campus) right next to the platform.

Would they need ORR approval to close it permanently or are they exempt from that as a tramway?

Why would any work need to be done to reopen it?

I don’t understand why it can’t be used even just as an alternative.

For instance earlier this week there was some sort of incident near the train station which meant the train station stop couldn’t be used and due to the way it’s routed means pipers row stop can’t be used leaving the city centre with no option. Trams in this case have to terminate at The Royal (a good 15 min walk out of the city centre). This happens quite a lot with either issues around the train station or signalling/road issues where the tram branches off from the old route.

Even if they kept St George’s as a back up, in those cases they could just revert to the old route and at least keep a city centre option going.

The original intention communicated by midland metro was 1 in 3 to St George’s the other 2 the train station.

I've heard that a ticket machine has been installed at St Georges but is currently covered so it is planned to reopen sometime soon.

Yes, probably when this is finished...

Due to start being used again from next month.

I can’t find the link now but read it yesterday that soon St George’s is going to be used again with trams going into St George’s or Wolverhampton Station (& Pipers Row) on an alternate basis.

Only after 7am though and not on Sundays (during that time it’s into Wolverhampton station only).

Then after a month or so it’s being closed again for works…..hardly seems worth it, why not just wait.

With all the various connotations I hope there’s some sort of indicator on the boards at St George’s, Pipers Row & Wolverhampton station thst also shows the next tram from the alternative station. Most people would happily walk from St George’s to Pipers Row rather than a 15 min wait for example.

Must have started early, or the driver must have put the wrong destination in because it definitely said St Georges at the front and there was passengers on board

Yeah I just find it strange it opens up for a month or so then has to shut again for works, why not just wait. Why get people used to the new way only to change it back again.

I don't think I've ever seen it used for coaches though, it's been the terminus stop for Banga's 530 bus for as long as I can remember.

I always thought it would have been good to run replacement buses from there if/when the line is down/partially down. But they stopped running those years ago they just direct everyone onto the 79 bus now.

Doesn’t the 530 go from the bus station now.

The Sunday service does, which is ran by NXWM, but Banga's service still uses the Police Station stop.
