Wolverhampton-Southampton

Good evening all
My son has asked me to try and find some cheap tickets to Southampton travelling and returning this Wednesday/Thursday...ie day return. The cheapest tickets i can find are around £44 return using his y-p railcard.
With the help i received from yourselves on my previous thread ( that saved me cash and gained me an enjoyable journey) im asking if anyone can suggest any split tickets that can bring the price down as much as possible. My son can travel at any time of the day but would like to try and have 6-8hrs in Southampton if possible.

I think the best stations to split at for day returns should be Coventry, Banbury and Basingstoke, i.e. 4 separate tickets - someone with an up-to-date fares manual should be able to give full details but you should be able to bring it down to £25-£30 that way.

Wolverhampton to Coventry, Off Peak Day Return (CDR) £3.90
Coventry to Banbury, Anytime Day Return (SDR) £7.15
Banbury to Basingstoke CDR £8.60
Basingstoke to Southampton Central CDR £8.20

Total £27.85 (with Railcard)

First train out that can be used is the 0941 arriving Southampton (and calling at all split points) at 1241. If your son wants an earlier start he can take the 0841 from Wolverhampton arriving 1143 but will have to pay £5.35 (SDR) Wovlverhampton to Coventry, bringing the total to £29.30.

The last direct train to Wolverhampton in the evening is the 1915 arriving 2214. There is a later 2015 which requires a change at Birmingham New St arriving Wolverhampton 2335.
